WTF is the point and why could it not wait until the spring update? Is it possibly a preparation for the release of GTA4 maybe?
Maybe that or maybe a foundation for some of the stuff that will come in the spring update. Nobody knows but MS...

Preparation for the upcoming dashboard update?
I think it is preparing xbox live to get bigger (so we don't suffer through a full week lost of xbl, again.)
