That's a good question. Is that the real topic? The philosopher Spinoza posited a neutral viewpoint, the so called "sub specie eternitatis", which in some interpretations means that any event, viewed from far enough away, will cease to be either important or unimportant.
In any case, doesn't it depend on your viewpoint whether an event is important or not? There are a couple of religions that espouse the notion that nothing that goes on in this world is important (or even real). Some sects of Buddhism would say there is only one important event and most people never experience it.
It can be a social question, a philosophical question and a religious question. Your view of what is/was an important event will probably change throughout your life. Does it matter if another person thinks it's important or only if you think it's important? I would guess by your use of the phrase "personally important" that it only matters if you believe it's important. Or perhaps you meant that by default there are events that happen to each person that must be considered important. In either case it's certainly not clear.
