Forums - Gaming - In general, wiimote--innovation or implementation?

As many know, Gyration, Inc. was the developer of the original console remote idea and patent.  So the question is did Nintendo create a wildly popular craze by simply expanding on their own idea or did they just mean to implement the Gyration patent from early on.  Every fanboy and his mom seems to argue, especially concerning the Xbox 360 Newton remote, that MSFT is to blame as a NTDOY copycat?  I feel many are missing the corporate picture--Who gets theirs first is #1 to anything else.  Thoughts?

Could Gyration make a good console by themselves? Nintendo innovated by successfully implementing a new idea on a gaming console.

We could also ask "Were PCs innovative? After all, all their components already existed before". Everything builds on previous innovations. The combination of existing things can be innovative too.

There are 2 ways to innovate:

_inventing (gyration)

_modify something existing to take it mainstream (Wii)

-> your title should be invention or implementation/innovation

yeah Xmote will copy the Wii but the Wii didn't copy they used the tools available to everyone.

I think it was a icture of innovation and implementation.

There is no such thing as an original idea. It's a long-standing misconception, and one that is ludicrous if you stop to consider it. How can you come up with an idea with nothing to base it on? You can't, of course; you have to derive your ideas from what you have available to you. Everything has a source, even ideas, and thus no ideas can truly be said to be original.

That's where innovation comes from, of course: when an idea is a combination of ideas that hasn't been present before, then there can be innovation. To that end, Nintendo having the same starting model as Gyration is not important; Gyration did not come up with the idea to combine motion-sensing with the fully one-handed controller setup and expansion port. In that regard, Nintendo was still innovative.
