Forums - Sony - LittleBigPlanet the "most important game ever"...

What contradiction? All Sony has done to "hype" this game is show it to people. Those that have tried it or seen it in action are excited about it and want to talk about it. That's not hyping, it's discussion. Friends talking to each other wouldn't be hyping a game. The phrase "this game is nothing but hype" indicates what the word hype means, and seeing actual gameplay (which people have) isn't the same. But whatever, call it what you want. The fact is people are excited about it.

It's pretty clear that some of us think claims of "most important game ever" in the news count as hype, while some don't. I think we can stop this discussion, we'd probably just keep repeating ourselves.

I can't stand platform games. I got sick of them in the early '80s when they were the most over-represented genre out there, but a multiplayer, physics-based platformer with user-generated content, from the creator of Rag Doll Kung Fu? Hmmm, I may just have to reassess my stance on the matter. Especially given that it is without doubt the best looking child-oriented game I've ever seen (sorry SMG fans).

I'm really interested to see how flexible the design is for creating physics puzzles, though. Half Life 2-style see-saws could get boring pretty quickly.

Saying “It’s going to be the most important game ever” is obviously hyperbole, but it can only be a good sign. I just hope it sells enough copies to keep Media Molecule making innovative and original games. I don't expect it to set the charts alight, but sales of over a million are quite probable. It's definitely an unproven market as far as the PS3 is concerned.

@ NJ5
Sure, it's hype, but if the game deserves it, what's so wrong with that?

@ Vertigo-X
Without much evidence? The source in question had a 2 hour hands-on with the game. Is that not enough to venture an opinion?

Played_Out: You are responding better than I did. I admit the quote is being used as hype even thought it's just a person's opinion. I agree that it's more of a good sign than pointless hype. I have more hope for its sales than you do, though.

Games that it might be possible to hype as one of the most important games ever:

  • Pong
  • Asteroids
  • Space Invaders
  • Pac Man
  • Donkey Kong
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Final Fantasy
  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • Madden
  • etc.

I don't agree with most of those (Asteroids, DK, SMB, Zelda, Sonic, FF) but I can at least understand why you listed them, but MADDEN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Joke?

I lot of games could go on that list. Madden is certainly one of them. Some people that play videogames only play Madden and a few others.

In other words games that sold (amazingly) well, defined genres, and became iconic ...

Maybe Little Big Planet will be able to (one day) be able to join this list of games, but it has a lot to prove before it makes it there; claiming that it is/will be "THE MOST important game of all time" is so foolish that it discounts your opinion on pretty much every game though.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Little Big Planet ends up being a game like Okami, Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, Psychonauts, and Zack and Wiki which is "super hyped" on the internet and no one buys it in real life.

Madden? Lol.

And SotC broke a million. :P

Actually, it may be near 2 million by now.

This game will take physics games too a new level. The level creator is just obscene.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

They better watch it with this type of hype. It could create a backlash.

And inevitably Sony would get the blame for overhyping, when they had little to do with it.
