Forums - Gaming - EA: 'We'll be gaming's greatest company'

Prince of Persia came out in 1989.

Mario Brothers came out first in 1983.

So even if you don't count Donky Kong. The first Mario Brothers game outdates Prince of Persia by 6 years.

Donkey Kong being 8 years older then Prince of Persia.

Nintendo is partially as great a developer as they are for the same reason that EA is - they own good developers (although, I'd have to say Nintendo probably owns much better ones).

People need to remember that.

Now, what has been stated in this thread is truth - Nintendo already has the status as "the Disney of videogames". They most definitely did have a very huge part in bringing videogaming to the level it's at today. The third generation of videogaming was started by the NES, which was released in Japan while the Crash of 1983 was taking place. The NES sold 60 million consoles, while its nearest competition - the Master System - sold 13 million. A very, very poor "competition", to say the least.

Assuredly, if it were not for the NES, gaming would be nothing like it is today. Thanks to the NES, we saw videogaming become a "mainstream hobby", and I can guarantee that the Turbografx16 and the Genesis wouldn't have existed if the NES hadn't. Without the NES, NEC likely wouldn't have seen gaming as a significant enough investment of their time and money. SEGA wouldn't have seen as much need to upgrade their Master System into the Mega Drive (or, quite possibly, they may have not even MADE the Master System), and even if they DID, the market just wouldn't have been quite as significant.

I don't know if anyone has told you but during the NES era, Nintendo was like the freaking mafia of the gaming world. They made or broke entire retail chains with their product shipments. When Nintendo cracked its whip, everyone answered or paid the price.

Nintendo was not the fun, family-friendly company you think of it as today. It was fearsome, evil, and powerful.

Nintendo didn't win entirely on its own merit, it won partially because its bullying and brutally aggressive tactics make the competition wet themselves.

Yeah... that sounds like Disney all right.

Nintendo really is the Disney of video games!

Well except Nintendo found a way to make themselves relevant again and turn it around. Unlike Disney and NBC who are rapidly losing marketshare and are in some trouble.

Mulan 4 and Bambi 3 aren't going to do it.

We appreciate EA saying it's not all about the money, but hasn't Nintendo already gone down as 'the Disney of videogames'?

To quote Jim Rome, whenever someone says its not about the money, it is about one thing, the money.  That is why EA milks all their franchises to death and is willing to put out a 7/10 game because it will make them money now instead of trying to make it a 9/10 or a 10/10 game that could make them more money later.

Last time I checked Pokemon is more popular than Final Fantasy. I actually like FF better, but that doesn't show in the sales.

As for the racing one, not sim-racing, but nonsim racing(granted there is only really 2 or 3 real competitors). And the Mario sports games are always more fun than any of the sim sports games.

As for strategy RPG's, I would like for you to list me more than 5 great games made by another publisher.

It doesn't matter how good other platformers are, if mario didn't exist I doubt anything today would be the same.

I'm willing to change my mind, but unless you can list me 1 game developer that has produced a million seller in more than 3 genre's you can't deny Nintendo's greatness (ps. the only other one that you will come up with is EA).

The problem is you are confusing publisher and developer.  We are talking about developers.  Pokemon is not developed by Nintendo.  Nintendo doesn't develop F-zero.  Nintendo doesn't develop a lot of their sports games.

Just a guess, but I bet Sega and the new Activison have produced done more than a million in three genres.

IDK Diseny is really starting to turn things around.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

Will their hubris be their fall?

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

there is a fine line between greatest and most powerful company... if they mean they will monopolize the market, then yes but they sure wont be known for there "great" games!

i would boycott EA if their games werent so damn good.

oh wait, their games arnt good at all.
why they hell arnt we boycotting them?

Apple Panic, the first platformer made. Released in 1981. Nintendo did not make the first platformer.

So basically I pwned everyone who thinks Nintendo created the first platformer.

I win! Booya!

Make me pull out not very known titles btw, I could have used the clone Space Panic too.

I was just saying you were wrong about Prince of Persia outdating Mario Brothers. Which... you were... and I still say you are being intellectualy dishonest by saying Nintendo isn't currently the best developer out there.

Instead using your own tastes over any sort of rational type of measurement.
