This thing is only $12. It has worked wonders for me and I swear buy it. It made one PS2 that had stopped reading DVD's a long time ago and then eventually had a lot of trouble with games work like it was brand new! You can use it for any DVD optical drive that is giving you trouble, Xbox included.

The PS2 Disc Read Error problem is very easy to fix, and I have encountered it multiple times my self. I definitely agree that the PS2 doesn't have the best DVD drive I have ever seen, but it works just fine as long as you keep it clean. It isn't something you have to ship back to the manufacturer to fix in most cases.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. umm no...this may fix 10% or so of the DRE on a PS2. The other 90% have to be fixed by calibrating the laser...turning 2 screws slowly on the motherboard...one for CD one for DVD...etc...

 This has fixed 2 of my PS2's and one of my friend's PS2's.  That is 3 out of the 3 that I have tried it on.  Man, what are the chances of that?  Like 1 out of 1000 right?  Obviously I must just be the luckiest guy on earth, right?

I used the same thing for my 360 when it first started having disk read errors and started scratching my disks, it worked ok. I've gotten much less disk read errors (still get one every hour or so, but much better than before) but it doesn't scratch my games anymore.

Thats prety lucky actually.

I modded well over 20 ps2's for my freinds in my college days as well as repaired(or tried to repair) atleast as many... Most of the PS2's DRE problems come from the fact that not enough voltage goes to the laser to read the disks. Most of the time CD disks don't work first but DVD's still work then later go DVD's as well. In any case, to fix that one must push more voltage to the laser by adjusting the voltage screws on the motherboard...but too much voltae will not work either so its a very delicate process of trun screw 25 degrees...test...turn again...test again...

That was the DRE issue on a PS2...otherwise having a dirty laser can happen to any system out there...which is where that product helps and can be used on PS1, PS2, xbox, 360, any movie DVD player etc...

 I have seen my friend do this to his PS2 so I know what you are talking about.  He messed with the position of the laser too.

I really haven't seen any research done to give specific numbers on the subject, so I think it is difficult to make any bold percentage claims either way without some kind of hard numbers to back them up.

i need this. my ps2 only plays burnt games, and cnt play ps1 games

I have a PS3, no need for a PS2 anymore :P j/k

Yeah, even if it doesn't work, you are out just $10 or so. It will work on any other electronics in your house too, so it is a pretty good investment all around.

@Akuma

I've been meaning to start a similar thread so people could link to it any time someone compares the remediable  DRE with RROD.
