I somehow doubt this will be anywhere near the disaster that was the Red Ring of Death. But after WiWi started that rather pathetic linkless thread, I though we should get a genuine discussion going on the issue.

Two of those links indicate that Sony is "unaware of the issue." Apparently, though it is a software-based problem, the PS3 must be returned in order to fix the issue.

i have a launch console with no hint of issues. and i watch alot of blu-ray movies. but im sure you dont want to hear from me.

If fail to update the console properly ie stop during an update, u might get this error....its even in the PS3 manual. Do not turn off the console during an update, it may cause problems...

Never had any issues with the console and mine is a launch model :D

There was one guy at NeoGAF who suffered this issue, most such issues seem to be caused by incorrect firmware updates like trying to upgrade the firmware with a version intended for a different region.

Hmmm. I suspect it is just in the normal run of hardware faults (even if it is caused by software). But if that is the case, clearly a few people have gotten it at the same time, and thats started off the BRROD rumours.

It is quite serious.  Since WiWi decided we were going to have a thread on it, I figured it may as well be one that actually had some links and information for people. 

I got the links very quickly from Google News when I typed in "Sony." 

Where does the red ring on the ps3 show up? I've been trying to see where it could possibly show if I ever got that problem.
