Super Metroid

  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo WiiU
  • 1994
  • Action-Adventure
  • Nintendo R&D1

'Super Metroid' is a game commonly mentioned among all-time classics. Rightfully so I might add, it is a monumental title and very influential in it's genre. The atmosphere created in the game is unprecedented, level-design superb; you'll feel very lost in it's world, trying to find a way out.

In the game, Samus tracks down the captain of the Space Pirates known as Ridley who stole the last of the Metroids and wants to use it to harness it's power. Gameplay centers around exploration and finding weapons and items to proceed ever closer to finding Ridley only to find out he wasn't the one pulling the strings. The game has too many secrets to count, and finally reaching the exhilarating endgame is a great moment. Only to find out you found just 67% of all the secrets.

I had played this game on the Super Nintendo way back when, but because I never owned one myself during it's prime, the game passed out of knowledge for quite a long time. Only to be rediscovered when it was re-released on the WiiU's virtual console. This made me remember that, yes, this game was amazing.

This game sparked a long lasting phenomenon that's still going strong, as evidenced once again very, very recently.

Yes.

My hints are easy this year it seems, each one has been guessed quickly.

Hint for game #40: In this game you collect trash.

Hint 2: To the Moon!
Hint 3: The main protagonists in this game are brutal, funny, stupid, crazy. They cause chaos wherever they go, and that includes a lot of games besides this one, including other long running game series, in which they showed up. And yes, no single protagonist, a horde of them.

Hint 4: The humans are the antagonists in this game. They are overly controlled by rules, cleanliness, industrialization.

The first new entry. You make cities in this PC game.

Also, am I 1 game/day behind?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Just go back to the OP and there's your answer. Today is November 22nd, which is the #40 day, so you're one day behind. Anyways, it seems no one's going to guess my #40 so I'm just going to throw the next hint for tomorrow's game:

#39 - An indie game that has consistently added new campaigns over the years as free DLC (though they're also sold individually for a cheaper price).

Cool. That's Shovel Knight.

A 3D platformer with a D-pad? Great idea!

I have no idea on your #40, the only rhythm games I ever played were a couple of Guitar Heroes.

Well that leads us to the next potential hint... some of the people involved with this game had previously worked at Harmonix, which created both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises.

It's a rather recent game. Very niche, but I wanna believe someone will get it. It's my first new entry this year.

Oh I think I've seen it. *one google search later* Thumper?

#40 Sonic Mania

A year ago if someone had told me that the greatest Sonic game ever made was just around the corner I would have laughed. But no, this really is the best Sonic game. There's enough levels in this game to make it twice the size of any of the old Genesis/Megadrive games. There's a boss at the end of every level, instead of every zone, and the bosses are creative as hell. The bonus areas to get the Chaos Emeralds are fun, and it's completely possible to collect all seven early on and go through the game as Super Sonic, Super Tails, or Super Knuckles. To top it all off you can play as three different characters, each one having access to entirely different parts of each level. This game clocks in at 20 to 25 hours to see and do everything.

P.S. The soundtrack is really good too.
