Forums - General - Disney CEO talks about launching their own streaming service

Disney is moving forward in its mission to launch new subscription services starting next year. The company said in August that movies from Walt Disney Studios and Pixar will no longer be available on Netflix starting in 2019 because of its own upcoming service. It also said an ESPN-branded video-streaming service will launch in 2018. This comes as cable TV sees falling subscriptions and people's watching habits continually shift in the age of new media.

Chairman and CEO Robert Iger said Tuesday that accepting these permanent changes in viewing habits helped drive Disney's decision.

"At some point, we felt it would be necessary for us to not only be disrupted, but to disrupt our business ourselves," Iger said. "We felt that we were no longer seeing a speed bump of disruption ... What we were seeing instead was real, profound and permanent change."

Iger said the mobile-friendly sports product, which will likely launch in the spring, will have 10,000 extra live sporting events. Viewers can purchase a monthly subscription to access them.

"Eventually, that app may possibly become the only way you watch ESPN," Iger said. The Disney-branded movie product will feature Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel films. The company will also make original films for the platform that won't be released in theaters.

Seems like a clever move with so many extremely strong IPs.

Shit for everyone who's not Disney executives though.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Screw that, have netflix and dont plan on getting other streaming services.
Guess this means goodbye disney.

This is why piracy will rain supreme.

Atm I already have three sports subscriptions and netflix.

Or i coudl do what others do is buy one of those chinese streaming boxes of eBay and get it all for free hmmm.

Given Disney reach, this can hardly fail to succeed. Maybe it may replace the movietheaters in the future for Disney.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

And in the meantime Netflix keeps raising its prices as well (at least here) while losing content.

I have cable and Netflix, not getting anything else. No HBO, CBS, Disney, Amazon Prime, PS Vue.

Look like what Netflix needs to do is continue to make great original content cause at eventually, I can see other companies doing something similar.

What will keep people from ultimately leaving Netflix is their original content and they really do have a few good ones.

^ this bugs me too.

They need to produce more of their own shows, if their asking for more $$$, meanwhile others are pulling their stuff from netflix.

Netflix DO produce a shit ton of shows. So much that I honestly can't tell how you are asking for more ...

The problem is they have so many shows and like 4 of them get traction. Right now the only thing i even think sounds cool is the amount of comedy legends they hire to do specials(which cost around 20-30 million dollars to make)

Sorry Disney, Netflix will remain king.
