Both have their upticks and downsides but there are things I get from each that can't be offered at the same time on both sides ...
The best western animation has to offer is more often based around comedy so it's easily the best way for me to get laughs and it's no wonder why the gags are extremely well written over there but the same can't be said for japanese gags where the content is poor along with the contexts behind it too ...
Japanese animation often has an undeniable advantage in animation quality and thus the images are much more detailed so western animation can't contest on that ground ...
Japanese animation is more varied in content but it hardly ever works out to an advantage since the seasonal cookie cutter anime from common studio's usually falls into the school setting trap, common scenarios or tropes and the best anime are the ones where they give the audience a sense of escapism in genres such as action, adventure, fantasy, mystery or psychological thrillers all of which can be supplemented with some drama if they choose. In that regard anime's that focus on genres such as slice of life, romance comedies, sports, music, pure comedies are shit sucking lame for the most part and I, myself don't much appreciate the mecha concept at all. Either way for most viewers they'd have to limit themselves in what type of japanese animation they'd consume to be able to get any enjoyment just like how they'd have to stick to comedies for western animation to get the best experience ...
As far as plot goes, western animation mainly features a self contained story in each episode with some form of continuity in the background whereas more serious japanese animation have full blown end goals to strive for with revisiting key points and long running series have multiple arcs or even sequels too! Both in this case excel in different areas but I like that japanese animation that intends to have a serious plotline are able to set in the mood however the best works of japanese animations are usually adaptions from other media rather than original works so it's a big blow if these shows don't get new seasons since one can't appreciate their detailed storylines to the fullest extent whereas western animation set a new finale at the end of a season and it ends up not being as big of a deal ...
As for soundtracks or effects, japanese animation has some of the most memorable and western animation doesn't put in a damn effort so it's easily forgettable ...
In short I like both western and japanese animation but I feel as if japanese animation has higher potential with more possible setbacks since they usually have to constantly keep high writing and animation quality to be consistently engaging while getting full adaptions to meet their full peak ...
