Etrian Odyssey II was the best recieved of the original trilogy. IMO the original DS trilogy games are unplayable with their unanimated alphamap characters, and high cost to reclass/respec a character. You had to drop ten levels, and EO4 changed that to two.

Atlus is well known for supporting systems well past their sell by date. Persona 3 and 4 came out on the PS2 in 2008 or later. Persona 5 came to PS3 this year. We will likely keep getting Atlus RPGs on 3DS until 2019.

The fans seems to prefer EO III more though. And the third one sold better too.

Well EOII has a higher user score on metacritic if that's anything to go by. The third one only got 50,000 more sales worldwide than the second one, according to vgchartz. The extra sales could be due to the brand growing between the second and the third games.

Project Octopath Traveler is an amazing traditional RPG by Square.

It does look nice, but don't expect it to be the norm anymore.

I agree on this, after I was fooled once with bravely default I won't be fooled again

Just like you said they aren't what they where, and their best showings after Ps2 era was on handhelds (DS & PSP), I don't think a strong comeback is possible but if they release a good game I will buy it, Nier automata is a great game, it deserves praise and love, Dragon quest XI is going to be great, too
