@twestern

Are you saying that Starcraft 2 can only be GOTY if it "changes significantly"? Then I ask you this: Change What?! What does SC2 need to change significantly to be a GOTY? The core gameplay which is part of possibly the most refined combat ever? The balance between the different races? Add heroes on the multiplayer like WC3? Add turnbased gameplay?

Hell, Starcraft is THE king of e-sports for a reason. They don't need to change their core gameplay. They don't need to change what has been considered by many as the greatest and most refined combat gameplay. They just need to improve on it.

And now tell me what GTA IV is innovating/changing from it's predecessor to be a GOTY candidate in your eyes? And SSBB? And MGS4? exactly.

You're right, they shouldn't change Starcraft II except for minor tweaks and a few new additions. The thing is though Starcraft isn't a 2008 game, it's a 1998 game. That's why it shouldn't win GOTY 2008.

I want my GOTY of the year to be a game that pushes boundries, brings us something new and exciting, and is fun. If it's a really good year for gaming I want something that will flip the whole gaming world on its head. Starcraft II is defintely fun, but since it's barely improving on what it did before it isn't pushing any boundries and it isn't bringing us much new.

-edit-

As for the other games, I think at the moment they deserve to be mentioned:

Super Smash Bros Brawl: Honestly, I'm only mentioning this now because it's out now and we do know it's good. Compared to everything else released this year it's without a doubt the king. As an added bonus, it isn't just a makeover of Super Smash Bros Melee, they make heavy tweaks and even added a lengthy single player, online, and completely new game changing mechanics. Starcraft II isn't doing that (adding that is).

As for GTAIV and MGS4 I'm expecting similar style games, but I'm also expecting leaps and bounds in the gameplay, presentation, and stories told. Starcraft II will have much better presentation but I'm not convinced it's going to blow away the original story telling of Starcraft and Brood Wars and I'm not convinced the gameplay is going to change any from the original game.

And honestly, so far from what I've seen of the three games, MGS4 and GTAIV don't look like an expansion pack and Starcraft II does.

Once again, nothing against Starcraft II, I'm going to buy and I'm going to assume I'm going to love it, but there are so many more more deserving games.

-edit #2-

And my cracking up earlier wasn't due to Starcraft 2 being mentioned as GOTY, it was due to you posting the hype text and taking it seriously.

brawl doesn't have a chance, probably MGS4 or GTA

only a site with members skewed towards nintendo would even think of giving brawl a GOTY award, not to say its bad, but its no SMG.

Brawl doesn't have much of a chance, gta4 or StarCraft II are my bets.
