so are there any books out there that have stories that are close to the general tone of Mass Effect? any recommendations?

dont know. but there is no point of reading them since the main story is in the game its self, is it not? and if its just a story about shepard, then i know what happens lol
Not entirely similar to Mass Effect but Red Rising trilogy is rather good, also the main character is often referred as the Reaper. The first book reminded me of Hunger Games but the other two were more like a space opera.
