All this Fallout talk has convinced me to reinstall Fallout 2. I might even go back to the original if I get motivated. I still have both discs.

Don't forget to become a porn star.

@Rocket. Who else would you want to develop it?

I mean there are only really two major WRPG developers out there now aren't there? Bioware and Bethesda? And maybe Obsidian?

Obsidian, several ex-Black Isle devs are currently there. And I think CDProjekt could do a better job than Bethesda since Fallout is more up their alley.

Didnt some of the Black Isle and Interplay devs end up at both Bioware and Obsidian? Either would be a better choice than Bethesda IMO. I've only played Morrowind and Oblivion and neither had a compelling enough storyline or Mythos to make me want to finish the game. Oblivion with guns would suck but I'm hopeful that Bethesda has at least listened some to the fanbase.

I replayed both Fallout 1 & 2 several months ago, not long after I found out they were making Fallout 3, and they both have held up extremly well although getting them to run correctly in vista was a bit of a pain. There are still a few boxed sets of 1&2 + the sucky Fallout Tactics floating around out there if anyone wants to give it a try. Gave $10 for mine. I just wish I could find a copy of Planescape Torment and Betrayal at Krondor for a reasonable price. Most want more than original retail 60ish for a used copy.

Obsidian (so far) has been poo.  They did Kotor2 which ripped its entire plot premise and half the character concepts from the original.  Their programmers did a terrific job on it, but their writers need a heavy dose of creativity.  NWN2 (another sequel to a Bioware game) was also not encouraging.  They have talent, but they're just not showing it off.  They need more original IPs I think.

Well I decided to start with the first one so I don't think pornstar is an option... Yet.

But boy oh boy when I hit the second game, I'm gonna seriously whore it up.

This game was dead the instant Bethesda said there would be no humor.

Never tried the KOTOR games I'm not much of a star wars fan. I felt NWN2 was an Improvement over the original but your right nothing really exceptional from them as a developer.

Truly my biggest fear is that it will have the same major faults of Oblivion:

1) Repetitive dungeon design.
2) Unbelievably dull and simplistic combat.
3) Hours of nothing. (lots of content-less land)

They kept talking about how desolate the world of Fallout is and how there shouldn't be that much in it, but that's ridiculous.  Fallout and Fallout 2 were stuffed full of content.  You never wandered aimlessly like you did in Oblivion, because there was tons of interesting stuff to explore (as opposed to millions of rocks, tress, and hills).

Don't forget about the wolves. You couldn't walk down a path without tripping over three of the bastards.

Hopefully the dog in the pic is just fallout3's version of the dogmeat NPC.

Graphically, this game looks terrible. The textures are horrid.

They are part of the crappy world design. Heh, you mentioned Oblivion could have been a defining WRPG. I think it is a defining WRPG, as it stands out as such a piece of crap in a once glorious genre. I miss the days of Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout 2, Deus Ex, KOTOR, and System Shock 2.

I see most WRPGs in the last 5 years as signs of massive decay in the genre, and it makes me sad. In the late 90s and early part of the decade it was easily my favorite genre, but now I'm trying to find a reason not to hate it. Here's to hoping Mass Effect gives me at least a glimmer of hope when I buy it on PC soon.
