Forums - Gaming - Uncapped framerate option and freesync nextgen?

Given that AMD has the freesync technology and that they are cheap to add for TV makers. And give that because of backwards comp ability and APU design, AMD is probably going to be the chip for ps5 and xbox two, I think there is a chance we could  finally have another option other than the 30fps and 60fps locked battle.

Correct if I am wrong, but with freesync a 30-45 fps is better than 30 fps locked.

Also, given that next gen we probably will have a easy time achieving 1080p, and 4k wont have been adopted by everyone yet, the console makers could adopt a option for uncapped framerate and couple that with freesync, so people with 1080p tv would be able to achieve 50fps-60fps uncapped while people with 4k tv could have the lower framerate.

While developer’s majority choose prettier graphics over framerate in gaming history, favoring the 30fps locked, next gen performance will outgrow the amount of work necessary for AAA development to achieve improvements on graphic detail fidelity. We may see more and more developers focus on framerate instead of investing in prettier real-time simulation.  Cause we will eventually reach a plateau where there is not enough artists on AAA development to really take advantage if they keep it locked at 30fps.

I am really curious if my train of thought makes sense, I don’t really understand the framerate meta but I think it makes sense.

FreeSync is already included in the one X so its not a next gen technology

Good news for me btw, altough my pc has a Nvidia GPU I have a Monitor with FreeSync.
And yes both GSync and FreeSync are truely amazing in making games better with no extra horsepower needed from the GPU in the pc/console.

Well I predict scorpio will be spinned into a next gen console with eventually having exclusives the original cant play.

Console makers adding freesync compability is free if people have the freesync tvs already

There won't be an "uncapped framerate" option for all games on consoles next gen. Don't even wasting your time dreaming of the idea. What should be a standard is 1080p/60 fps with ALL games having the option of some form of 4K.

If you want the bells and whistles you speak of to work together, PC is where you might want to consider heading.

Agree uncapped framerate would be a horrible thing concidering not everyone has the same display device and there isn't a definitive standard in the "Freesync vs Gsync" market either and TV's havn't adopted the technology in massess so people buying a tv right now would be in a bad situation.

FreeSync is obviously an amazing thing to include next gen but like I stated above its not a new technology in consoles since the One X already supports it

Microsoft is slowly regaining some goodwill from gamers they got a lot of hate throws at them and they need to continue a clear course else the hate will just come back stronger. Phil Spencer and his team have said many times its not a next gen device and it will not be.

But that is a different topic entirely and even if they would "spin" it the console will still be a part of the current generation and thus FreeSync is a current gen technology in both consoles and pc's

Lol. Call the TV manufacturers and see if they care^^

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I think adaptive synch will be advised to be used to cap to other framerates, like 40 or 45 or whatever the devs manage to get their game to put out consistently (but above 30, no game should go under 30). Doing it with uncapped framerates would result in wildly varying responserate to inputs and not feel very good to play in my opinon.

Hdmi 2.1 will support freesync or something similar. I doubt all tvs will support it though, it will be an even lower adoption rate than 4K.

It depends on how simple it is to switch to uncapped frame rates without any side effects. For example with fsx I had to limit the frame rate so the terrain generation could keep up. Letting the gpu run as fast as possible leaves less time for gpu compute actions for streaming and procedural generation. Plus you probably want to avoid games that swing wildly from 30 to 50fps.

You talk like the X has been out for years. It is new tech in consoles lol.

Deffenitely is but he was talking about "next gen" specifically :)
