Forums - Sony - Guerrilla: Horizon’s Sequel Would Have To Have An Equally Deep Story & More Machines

A few developers of Guerrilla Games have been interviewed by Game Informer (May 2017, issue 298) after the release of the highly acclaimed open world action RPG Horizon: Zero Dawn, launched last month exclusively on PlayStation 4.

When asked about what would be important in a potential sequel, Narrative Director John Gonzalez said:

We’ve been absolutely humbled by the players’ response to the story and their emotional connection to Aloy. Should a sequel happen, our number one goal would be to respect that connection by doing our utmost to create a story that resonates just as deeply.

We feel duty-bound to honor the time that players have invested into Horizon: Zero Dawn. The last thing we want to do is disappoint the folks who have given the game such a passionate support.

Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek, on the other hand, has a specific area that could be expanded upon.

More machines. They are a lot of fun to design, build, animate, and play with. I wish we could have done a hundred. But reality is a harsh mistress; it doesn’t allow you to make hundreds of machines.

The interview also has some hints on improvements that might come to Horizon: Zero Dawn and future entries in the franchise. Guerrilla’s Game Director Mathijs de Jonge addressed some of the critiques advanced to the game with the following words:

It’s been a big project for us and I’m really happy how it all came together. I see a lot of praise for the variety the world offers and the experience as a whole. That some parts don’t shine quite as brightly as others is something that was kind of inevitable due to the scope. We are looking closely at any critiques as part of plotting out our plans for the future of Horizon.

de Jonge also explained why there are more weapons than those Aloy can equip at once; it sounds like this may be even patched in the future.

At some point we had more weapons on the wheel, but the controls got in the way with how quick we wanted the switching process to be; it just got too finicky. We have some ideas on how we can improve weapon/loadout switching, but I can’t share anything on this yet.

Guerrilla’s Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million units in the first two weeks since its launch, which pretty much secured a sequel though the developers are working on a story expansion first.

So the sequel has to be at least as good as the original? Fancy that.

Well, kind of obvious, isnt it?But I will be looking foward anyways!

Oh, improve in one more thing:music.Music is so underappreciated in games nowadays.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Dunno how I feel about this, since I first saw the announcement trailer this felt as a standalone game, not the first entry in a series, maybe one or two sequels are possible but then that's it. That beeing said I think we will see a Killzone game before we see Horizon One (?) Dawn...

Sequel needs improved enemy AI and better combat too, imho. You get too powerful too quickly in Horizon and combat becomes a bore. Lastly, greeeeeeeeatly improve the side missions and errands.

I will be looking forward to a sequel whenever they make one. The story was indeed the most interesting aspect in my opinion. The world is pretty big, but if I'm not mistaken this world takes place mainly in what we would've called California in present time. I'm interested in them perhaps going out of there and finding different places and new things.

critics will still be nitpicky even if their previous nitpicks was addressed.

CPU: Ryzen 9950X3D
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5 PRO

Hopefully they'll focus less on real world animals when designing new Machines and focus more on dinosaurs and mythological creatures.

Im gonna use numbers because i dont know how to say it and be clear in another way, lets say they had 20 machines for this game (its just an example i dont know or want to know the real number), if they make a sequel i would expect 20 new machines plus the old ones for a total of 40, but if they can increase the number of new machines while keeping the quality each one got in this game, then yeah i would love that too.

The story being more interesting is obvious for a sequel and i cant say more about some other stuff because i havent finished the game yet, so some of the stuff i may want right now for a sequel may already be in the game.

More than number of machines, make them distinct. I loved encounters that had mix of machine types affecting the way I approached it. I also hope can ride a massive machine (Thunderjaw size) around as a mount and have it attack for you.
