PS5 Will Launch In Late 2018, Will Be More Than 10 TFLOPs- Analyst
That sounds a bit too soon to me...

The PS4 is moving from success to success, with record breaking sales, and a frankly stellar lineup of games that seems to recall the glory of the PlayStation 2 days. With Sony just having released the PlayStation VR, PlayStation 4 Slim, and PlayStation 4 Pro last year, one would expect that we are slightly over half the PS4’s intended life cycle- however, one analyst disagrees.

Macquarie Research Analyst Damian Thong has stated that he expects Sony to launch the PlayStation 5 in 2018’s second half. Not just that, he expects it to be a rather powerful system too, with a 10 TFLOPs GPU that would far outstrip any other console on the market- including Microsoft’s Scorpio, which is due for release later this year.

“We see sustained profit growth in Game & Network Services. We forecast OP growth from ¥140bn in FY3/17 to ¥180bn in FY3/18, driven by expanding software sales and profits,” the analyst’s note reads. “A rising digital ratio and a higher mix of first-party titles will help margins – Horizon Zero Dawn, which launched on 28 Feb, looks to have had a good start with a Metacritic score of 88. While we have tempered expectations to account for rivalry with Microsoft/Xbox and PC gaming, we note that the success of PS VR (which has reached 915K units sold) highlights the health of the ecosystem. We expect Sony to launch a >10 TFLOPS ‘PS5’ in 2H18 to secure the installed base.”

Is this something you see happening? Next year seems to be a bit too soon to me- and if nothing else, it would make PlayStation 4 Pro owners really angry. On the other hand, it would be a hell of a way to make the Scorpio obsolete far before it can do any serious damage. What do you think? Let us know in the comments sections.

Around the Network

Nah, Holiday 2019 at the earliest.

That seems too soon to me! Though I guess that I'm kind of over new console releases anyway, because I'd see that we reached a point where we can do basically whatever we want with current technology.

This to me would seem more probable.  I can see it coming out sooner to combat Scorpio, but that would also canabalize PS4 sales.

yeah... no. PS4 sales are beasting. no way would sony cut that short by next year. this gen is still going strong and they are now making the most profit from software sales and PSN. i expect PS5 by 2020

Around the Network

I'm guessing a 2019 holiday release aswell. Although PS4 and Pro still being highly valuable.

I don't see the point at all, this generation feels like it has barely begun. Also how much does this analysis expect this 10 TFlop PS5 to go for at launch? $600-700?

Also some OP text got warped to the bottom of the page, I'm going to try to fix it hopefully without nuking the thread...

Yea like other said 2019 is the absolute earliest I could see them releasing this. I expect something more like holiday 2020.

Do you come straight out of N4G? Gamingbolt is a clickbait site that's spamming the most sensationalist links there.

PS4 is in beast mode right now, to suggest Sony kill their baby prematurely is just silly.

PS5 might be 10Tflops or more deff possibly, but they won't release it in 2018 that would be quite insane. They will use the PS4Pro as a true mid cycle upgrade, 3 years of ps4, 3 years of the pro and then move to the ps5 and repeat that cycle.

So they should announce the ps5 sometime in 2019 and release it at the end of that year. Every analyst that thinks its earlier does their assumptions because of the Scorpio but Xbox will not compete with the PS4 at any point and they don't want to release new hardware too fast after the pro and vr because people want to feel like they got enough support with their hardware purchases and I think sony knows this.
