Forums - Gaming - Digital Foundry has a new product.

You all take DF's spec leaks way too seriously.

If Scorpio or Switch have great games or other features that appeal to you, then go enjoy them.

Whether Scorpio is "true 4K" or not - it's basically Xbox One Pro - meaning you get a range of enhancements. Make of that what you will.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Digital Foundry made reasonable interpretations off of the white sheet that is freely available on Microsoft's developer portal. Whether the OP thinks Digital Foundry's interpretations are damaging or not is not their fault. Ultimately, it's Microsoft's responsibility to control the messaging.

If the spec leaks turn out to be true, then I say it's a service to gamers and puts companies on notice not to BS about their product's capabilities.

If the spec leaks turn out to be false, then DF's cred drops sharply and people will stop paying attention to them.

IMO if information that is of interest to consumers is accurate then putting it out to the public is usually more beneficial to consumers than harmful, and thus it is usually a good thing, so long as it is done legally.

I expect DF's spec leaks are legal, even if the source has breached some form of NDA or confidentiality agreement.

I do tend to come across too seriously sometimes. I am just asking the question, "Has Digital Foundry gone to far with these assumption laden spec leaks?" From my point of view, yes they have. Let LKD and Emily handle the rumours and assumptions. Digital Foundry should aspire to be better than they are and stick to the facts. They may be getting a lot of views with these tactics, but they are damaging their reputation in the process.

News should be based on facts, not on what is most likely. It's not only Digital Foundry's reputation at risk but also the future of the systems they assume are underpowered. Digital Foundry has admitted they receive information from people who are obviously breaking NDA's. They should be held just as liable as those people who are breaking those NDA's.

You can't claim that they are breaking NDA by releasing fake information.  It's one or the other.

Their estimation is based on facts.

We know what performance is possible on the Scorpio.  MS gave us the information themselves.  http://www.xbox.com/en-US/project-scorpio

Now whether that GPU is capable of giving native 4K completely depends on the game.  Some games will easily run at 4K 60fps, other games will struggle to run at native 4k 30fps.  That's how this always always always works.  MS didn't invent magic, and put it in their box.

I never said DF was breaking NDA's. Why would they even have one?  DF knowingly accepted info about the Switch specs that was obviously violating someone else's NDA agreement. Maybe they shouldn't participate in the breaking of a contract?

We know for a fact from benchmarks in some games, the fastest Graphics card in the world can't do 60 fps at 4k.
So why is it shocking that the Scorpio which as MS has admitted is a much slower GPU can't achieve native 4k with some titles.

This thread is not about the capabilities of the Scorpio. Its about Digital Foundry and the wild assumptions they make with there spec leak videos. Their latest Scorpio spec video is a good 75% speculation. Why cant they wait untill they actually get their hands on one to test, and then tell us what the results are?

I never said DF was breaking NDA's either.

I used the word "they" which can refer to anyone; from context I was referring to your comment here: "people who are obviously breaking NDA'.

Either the info is fake or they are breaking NDA, not both.

Much of this information gets out to other hands.  If someone breaks an NDA to get information out, do you think it matters who gets the information?

From DF's perspective, they get the benefit of being the first to break the story.  If they don't break the story, someone else will.  They have no ability to stop it from getting out.

If I'm someone who doesn't care about my NDA and I want to let people know about something; I'm going to send it to somewhere that can release information.  If that's not DF, then I can send it to someone else.

But a site highly regarded like Digital Foundry should not be lowering themselves down to the level of common rumor mongers. YouTube already has millions of them already.

Because if they get lots of people to read the article/watch the video DF gets money.
