Uncharted series mo-cap director has passed away

Gordon Hunt worked on the Uncharted series since its inception in 2007.

Tributes are pouring in today across the games industry following news that Gordon Hunt, a motion capture director who worked on the Uncharted franchise, passed away over the weekend after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. He was 87.

Tributes flood in for Uncharted mo-cap director

Hunt, who was the father of actress Helen Hunt, is not only remembered for his work on Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed action-adventure series, but also on classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as Scooby Doo and The Flintstones. Hunt also directed episodes Coach and Frasier, and was involved in stage plays such as My Fair Lady and Camelot.

A number of members of the Uncharted voice over team kicked off the tributes on Twitter, with Emily Rose, who voices Elena Fisher in the series, commenting: "Deeply grieved that my friend & mentor Gordon Hunt has left us. Everything I have of this career I owe to him.”

Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North added: “Heartbroken. Love him so much,” while series writer Amy Hennig posted her own tribute: "It's impossible to overstate the impact Gordon had on so many lives. I am endlessly grateful for his friendship and guidance," she said.

In addition to his extensive work behind the scenes, Hunt also worked as an acting teacher for 40 years, where he taught a number of famous faces, including his own daughter, Jimmy Fallon, and Jonathan Banks. Read more on Hunt’s accomplishments via the Hollywood Reporter.

The Uncharted franchise launched in 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and has gone on to sell nearly 30 million copies worldwide. The latest installment in the series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, signals the end of Nathan Drake’s adventures, and also Naughty Dog’s involvement in the series. However, the studio is still supporting the game until at least spring 2017 with various multiplayer add-ons, plus the standalone Uncharted: The Lost Legacy expansion.

Hunt had served on every Uncharted title bar A Thief's End, including the PlayStation Vita prequel title, Uncharted: Golden Abyss. He was also involved in a number of other video games, such as God of War 3, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and the SOCOM franchise.

Never really knew the guy tbh. Wonder if anyone else in any other team has passed away, like people in Grip or other positions.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
