Released today, Sony is already selling its PlayStation VR unit at a profit, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shawn Layden.

"We’re making money on the VR console," Layden told Polygon, though he didn't elaborate much further. Similarly, the PlayStation 4 was profitable for Sony less than a year after its release in 2013.

How do you define profitability though. Most tech has huge research and development costs. If you try to recoup these costs on the first 10,000 units sold you can say the product was sold at a huge loss but if you spread that over the first 5 million sold you could say it is immediately profitable. Most technology is cheaper to make than people realise but its all the other costs that have to be paid too that add to the cost per unit. The wii u was absolutely dire cheap technology that probably was very cheap to make but then when you factor in the R&D much more expensive per unit because of the lowish sales.

Not really. Looks like there is too much supply. Got mine today in the mail. Hoping they would be sold out everywhere so I can flip it on ebay. But noooooo, Sony had to over produce them 😐

Sold out until December in Australia, flipped my unit for $200 profit.
