Japanese line up for PSVR. Preorders sold out. PSVR hasn't released yet. 'PSVR has failed' (past tense). Incredible.

Any actual numbers?

Yeah, this doom-saying is a yawn fest...
I mean, fuck if I know what kind of success it will have, but come on...

This thread topic (before off-topic trolling) does make me think about how VR
might have different success and courses of development in different countries,
it's usage pattern and what it offers may appeal more or less to different cultures.
Much has been made about how console gaming has heavily fallen off in Japan,
no doubt heavily helped by the dynamics of PS3 generation, but how does VR change that?

Yeah, that's the point. I haven't got a clue how successful it's going to be and neither has anyone else at this point. All I'm seeing is 'wishful' thinking in favour of it failing. It's a sad state of affairs that infects every forum now.

this is good news for gaming

Pre order in store, getting it in a couple of hours myself...

The future has started :)

Yes, I got myself the Oculus Rift as well as Gear VR and I tried HTC Vive for several hours at a friend of mine. Biggest problem by far is the resolution. Those pixels are just so friggin' HUGE, it's not even funny. At first I told myself it's okay and that I will get used to it, but that never happened. I can't stand it anymore, I haven't uses my hardware in weeks. And now PSVR comes around, where the resolution is even lower than with mobile solutions or Oculus and Vive. Yikes.

The lack of content isn't even a real problem for me. One of my favourtie apps is just the Oculus cinema. Just sitting there in a big ass cinema enjoying whatever the hell you like from movies to games was an awesome imagination for me! But again, the low resolution makes everything not pleasant at all. Movies are somewhat ok if you're just watching for 30 minutes or something. But gaming isn't fun at all in the cinema. It's too damn eye-straining, I can't stand it for more than 5 minutes.

I am even lucky enough to not get motion sick, I can play Minecraft in VR for hours without problems, jumping around, running like a mad man and whatnot. But in the end you very soon will find that it's the exact same game and VR delivers nothing to it. The idea of being in that world is nice, but the tech doesn't allow full presence right now. Besides the low resolution, the FOV is also too low.

Oh yeah, there's porn. Been there, done that, it's not as mind-blowing as I would have thought. More often than not the perspective is fucked up and you get double images and whatnot, not a pleasant sight. With the Gear VR I can get it somewhat under control by moving the lenses. But I don't care enough to do that all the time.

Those are just some examples from the top of my head. Bottom line, I really REALLY wanted to love VR. I spent a shitload of money and tried everything there is, I tried that shit for countless hours with every setup imaginable (Oh boy is cardboard shitty!) but I can't any longer pretend that it's somehow even remotely cool. The drawbacks are FAR too big right now, technology still has a long long way to go. The way I see it, most people will use the headsets maybe two weeks and then they will just collect dust somewhere. I mean, I am an enthusiast, and even I am turned off by VR by now. Looking at the steam stats, Oculus and Vive aren't doing too hot either. They are barely selling at all, despite being available at amazon and local retailers by now.

Let's face it, VR has failed yet again. It's just too soon for the tech, even until this very day.

So the biggest problem for you is the resolution? I'll be fine with that. I played ps1 on a CRT projector back in the day, 320x240 blown up to 70" with split screen as well. I played Descent 2 with shutter glasses on it at 320x240 30fps per eye. True the crappy non native 3D support had me switch back to using a monitor after a few months but it did work.

How is the fov too low? Do the games not increase the in game fov to match the 100 degree fov the VR helmet offers? That's 3 times the fov I get now with a projector.

Occulus is only now coming out here (available online only), Vive isn't even known in shops yet. PSVR is available in shops tomorrow, I'm picking one up. I do believe games that make an effort will work better in VR than a patch for existing games like Minecraft. I'll see tomorrow how well Driveclub VR works, downloading now. The VR store section is up.

Anyway I won't be using it for watching movies, I already have a projector for that. Being able to look around naturally is what I expect from VR.

Nice appearance in the Amazon thread.

There's something nostalgic about Japanese gamers lining up to buy the next Playstation product.

I hope we'll get first day or atleast first week sales infos from Sony - really interested in how PSVR is doing regionally/world wide

Summer lessons :p (and games like it)

and that Sony allows VR porn.
Im not surprised.

Plus its a new way to experiance stuff, japan is big on new experiances, they have a serious "work hard, play hard" mentality.
