Forums - Gaming - If You like Dungeon Hacking and Lovecraft You might Like Darkest Dungeon.

I've always knows of H.P. Lovecraft and of the Chtulhu mythos for most of my adult life.  But it was only within the past five years I've really grown an appreciation of his influence.  I'm not so much of a Chtulhu fan but more so of the dread and dispare atmosphere that was used in most of his works and have been later seen in most modern psychological horror media.  And then there's Darkest Dungeon.  Reading a review on Darkest Dungeon, I came across this bit of info:

"Darkest Dungeon is one of those rare games that can legitimately be called Lovecraftian, and actually does it well. There are fish people and eldritch horrors, shamblers and necromancers, but this alone does not a Lovecraftian game make; the whole theme is the bleak, hopeless struggle against forces of unimaginable power, where your life and your sanity are constantly at risk, and the ending (no spoilers, don’t worry) perfectly encapsulates this style as well."

It seems that Darkest Dungeon is a "side scrolling turn based roguelike RPG" which rings of old school mechanics while adding the Lovecraftian elements.  I sort of came across this title by accident.  And while I favor disc-based titles over digital-download only ones, this will probably be one of the first digital-download only games I'll be playing on my future PS4 Pro.

I like the visuals and creature design, will look into this game.

I like RPGs, dungeons, rogue-like games, tactical and turn based games. Grinding and generic dungeons not a problem to me. So I was sure that this game is exactly for me. But after I played it... I was disappointed. This mental illness and madness mechanics is so annoying. Need to use torches again and again cos they go out like matchsticks. Anyway it seems that my opinion is not so popular cos the ratings are quite good.

That game is so fucking old it's not even funny anymore.

Pretty good though for masochists.
