‘Gears of War’ Movie Adaptation in Works at Microsoft, Universal

Microsoft’s “Gears of War” video game franchise is headed to the big screen.

The film adaptation, announced during a livestream for the upcoming release of “Gears of War 4,” is being developed with Universal Pictures under the eye of veteran film producers Scott Stuber (“Ted,” “The Kingdom”) and Dylan Clark (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”). A movie based on the popular third-person shooter franchise has been rumored for years, but Rod Fergusson, studio head of game developer The Coalition, said now was the right time to make the leap to film.

Well that is reasonable start. At least thety aren't nobodies. But let's face it, producers are pretty meaningless when it comes to the quality of the finished product, it will be all down to the writers and director.

I know next to nothing about the story of Gears of War, but I can't imagine there being a strong fanbase for this franchise without there being a reasonably decent story core, at least for the first 3 games. But even if for movie purposes the story is lightweight, a good adaptation writer will be able to take the basics and flesh it out. But that's the thing, will they get a good writer who respects the material? Or will it be a hack writer, or a decent writer who phones the script in because "it's only a video game adaptation".

They should bring in some of the guys from Epic who created the franchise as story consultants.

They don't need that. Gears 1 was written by Eric Nylund, MS's own. Also, Rod Ferguson was the director of the first 3 games and head of The Coalition now.
The OP should've included what Rod said regarding the movie.
