Well, obviously that plays a role in all this, but what you are pointing out isbmore of a conveninence or natural step than a beneficial decision. This isnt the first time we are seeing revised skus in the industry, thisis the first time that we are seeing revised hardware that is significantly more powerful but yet in the same generation. Make no mistake, this isn't because AMD has better chips now and about the constantly evolving tech scape, this is because they do not want to let go of their existing install bases... ever. If the new hardware doesn't replace the old one, and games can still be played across SKUs, what reason does anyone have to leave one console and their entire existing library and jump to another console? Why do you think MS is all of a sudden such a big fan of online cross play between Xbox and PS4 even tho they were fully against it in the past? |
I am not making a mistake. This is the reality we live in. It's the underlying reason why we are getting Neo and Scorpio. They want to keep their installbase? However, Sony didn't deem it necessary to throw in a PS2.5 after the GameCube and original Xbox arrived. Instead, the PS3 was released one whole year after the Xbox360. Where was the more powerful revised intermediate step during the 7th gen? The 7th. console generation, one of the longest lasting.
No, we are not getting Neo/Scorpio because AMD has new chips now. It was the plan all along. We live in a short lived time more than ever. New technologies have become faster available and affordable for the average consumer. HD ready, HDTV, UHDTV, now there are 8k TVs out and a japanese TV channel starts the first 8k broadcast. This happened in the last decade. Have you ever taken a look at the common resolution of CRT-TVs to which NES, SNES, PSX, Dreamcast and consoles of the last generation were hooked up to?
What was that Sony had everyone know some short time ago? Neo is happening because the fear of people flocking over to PC. Why? Because they fear people realize PC is tha best gamin platform eva?! No. Because the market for PC (components) isn't any different. The cost of Desk- and Laptop computer nowadays is only a fraction compared to 15-30 years ago. Many know this, but aren't aware how advances in various technologies (i.e. computer chip/display technology) is affecting the wider range of consumer goods. It isn't simply "constantly evolving tech scape". The pace has changed entirely. Yes, of course they want to keep their "install base", that is why they have to adept like anyone else.

I'm not making this up. This is not some theory of mine, this is the actual given situation, and Sony and Microsoft are well aware of this.
"Why do you think MS is all of a sudden such a big fan of online cross play between Xbox and PS4 even tho they were fully against it in the past? "
Because MS does what has to be done to keep Xbox afloat. Means, the opposit of what they were doing precendently.
Also i don't see were more contraction and focus is supposedly happening. Looking at the market as a whole or just at my near environment. Regarding the latter, surprisingly nothing has changed in the last 20 years, 100% the same. Those who are fans of certain franchises buy the respective console. Those who always bought multiple gaming systems just do that. A very small minority i should add. I see three more or less successful manufactureres of home and mobile consoles with their significant shares of the cakes. If anything the market has more stability. When Casio, Coleco, RDI in the 80s and Atari, Philips, Sega, Apple, Panasonic in the 90s left the business with bloody noses the market became more contracted and focused. Focused towards Sony and Nintendo.
