Forums - Sony - Sony: PS4 Neo, PS4 Slim to be the last upgrade for PS4's console cycle

It makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see 3 years between consoles from now on.

2016
Neo releases | PS4 guaranteed support for a further 3 years

2019
PS4 support begins phasing out | PS5 releases | Neo has guaranteed releases for a further 3 years

2022
Neo support begins phasing out | PS5 Upgrade releases | Standard PS5 has guaranteed support for a further 3 years

^ this.

Smooth transitions, they ll make it work.

I dont think that always keeping forwards compatability (so xbox one (1.3 teraflops) can play games the scoripo has, and beyound) is a good path.

It will limit what the games of the future can be & look like, if they always have to take into consideration older tech.

Console gamers are used to generations, and they are there for a reason.

As long as going forwards there is backwards compatability, everything will work out.

It makes 0 sense to not call it the PS5.

If they want to create an iterative platform like the IPAD it doesn't make sense to make the first iteration of that platform the PlayStation 5.

Uh, the IPad and iPhone both have generations.

And both of those devices have been iterative from the first model. If sony are going to make an iterative platform with long term backwards compatibility it doesn't make sense it brand it as a ps5. Everything would be a "ps5" game, when the original ps5 system disspeared 15 years ago. It makes more sense to just have the games as "PlayStation" games and that's it. Then have each PlayStation Device launch with a codename, a.k.a PlayStation Neo.

Maintaining numerical branding when you are creating a long-lasting eco system doesn't make sense.

iphone 4 + iphone 4s

iphone 5 + iphone 5s

iphone 6 + iphone 6s

iphones have generations.

You just need to make sure future models are backwards compatible (can use older software) and everything is good.

Something just sits wrong with me having "PlayStation 5" on a games cover, when it'll be playable on every PlayStation for years to come. And when do they swap the branding over on the cover, or do they stick with having "PlayStation 5" up their forever?

With Iphone etc everything is digital, they're just called apps, Ipad Games, Iphone Games. IOS games, whatever you want to call them. So they shouldn't be branded as "PlayStation 5" games imo.

It wont.

Playstation 5, will have games that cant be run on a PS4 (normal version).

Thats what makes it a PS5.

PS4neo might run some PS5 games (at lower resolutions). Kinda like how today some games, you can get PS3 versions of instead of PS4 ones.

Every future PlayStation I meant. I don't think when you are releasing an iterative platform you should stick with numerical branding. You don't get Iphone 6  games, you get IOS or Iphone games.

They may keep "only on playstation" and on the back list the base versions it's compatible with.

You're comparing mobile games with console games. Plus, take Minecraft, for eg. Not compatible with IPhone 4 and older. So, it's not just a matter of saying "this is an IPhone game". It doesn't work on all iPhones.

But if there's never going to be a PlayStation 6 because they're switching over to iterative hardware with full backwards compatibility then why name them "ps5" games for eternity.
