Sony: Standard PS4 Will Be Able to Play “All of the Games” Releasing This Generation

Since Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 4 Neo hardware revision, they’ve made sure to explain that it’s “an addition to the existing line-up, not a replacement,” and every PS4 game will play on both the standard and high-end systems. Speaking with CNBC, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House revealed that every PS4 game released this console generation will work on the standard system:

[Neo is] a higher end version of the PlayStation 4. We will absolutely have a single community of players. All of the games releasing within this life cycle [of consoles] will absolutely be playable on the standard PS4 … This just offers the consumer another option. If you are looking for the highest graphics performance, if you recent bought a 4K TV and you’re looking for content, then Neo is going to be great option for you. But it is that – an option – rather than saying the cycle has moved on.

So, even if Sony does happen to create another console revision after Neo, expect every single PS4 game released this generation to still work on the standard system.

House also addressed the fact that consumer expectation for new innovations has changed:

People invest in a console and they want to have that investment validated over a decent period of time. That being said, with iterations like Neo we are, to some degree as an industry, acknowledging the pace of iteration has shifted. … People have become attuned to a slightly different cadence of innovation. The critical thing is to give the consumer options, rather than dictate the future for them.

As in previous interviews, House declined to comment on a release window for Neo.

Games on PS4 Neo Will Have a Higher Resolution & Enhanced Graphical Experience, Sony Says

June 15, 2016 Written by Jason Dunning

With a report earlier this year claiming that all PlayStation 4 games running in ‘Neo Mode’ on the new hardware must play at 1080p or higher, Sony Interactive Entertainment America President Shawn Layden has said that games on PS4 Neo will have better resolution and graphics.

Speaking with Time, Layden explained that PS4 games will continue to work on both models, but games on Neo will look better:

With this move towards a high-end PS4, it’s not to bifurcate the market. We’re not creating haves and have-nots. There’s only going to be one game on sale, and it will play on both [consoles]. You’ll have the same experience, but one will be delivered at a higher resolution, with an enhanced graphical experience, but everything else is going to be exactly as you’d expect.

With the announcement of Microsoft’s Project Scorpio at E3 2016, Layden said these mid-generation hardware revisions are good for gaming, but they’re both in uncharted territory:

What’s good for video gaming is good for PlayStation. We’re seeing apparently Microsoft taking a similar course to ours, which is to innovate within the life cycle of the console. It’s nothing that’s ever been done before, so there is no road map to how to do that. Both companies are trying to find the right way to bring that to developers, to bring it to market, to talk about it. But seemingly they’re doing similar things to what we want to do, which is to bring more power to developers, to bring more weapons for them to create games with, to create an enhanced experience. Again I think it’s good for gaming, so it’s good for us.

Layden also agreed with Xbox’s Phil Spencer that these new machines don’t mean we’ll be getting a new console every two years.

Mentioning that they aren’t “trying to incite any fanboy wars around this,” Layden said he and Spencer are good friends. “I think the relationship right now between PlayStation and Xbox is very respectful, very civil. Phil Spencer, I like to say he’s a good friend of mine, we both talk a lot. He’s been very supportive of the things we’re doing here, and we return the same respect,” he said.

According to a previous comment from Sony’s Andrew House, games developed for PS4 Neo will require a small but manageable extra amount of work.

PS4 Neo: Andrew House Explains Why It Isn’t at E3 2016, Says Games Will “Play an Awful Lot Prettier”

In a short interview with the BBC, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House explained why the newly confirmed PlayStation 4 Neo isn’t at E3 2016 this week:

Really very very simple: Just as was the case with PlayStation VR, we feel it’s important to show people the new hardware, the new platform when we’ve got the full range of experiences that can take advantage of it.

Asked if this PS4 hardware refresh is the first sign of a new strategy for Sony where they’ll do more heavy-duty upgrades over a console’s lifecycle, House said:

To be very clear, the high-end PS4, code-named Neo, that we are working on is an addition to the existing line-up, not a replacement. And perhaps we have an opportunity to move slightly away from just a static console that remains absolutely the same for a period of six, seven. eight years, and perhaps offer, in addition to the current PlayStation 4, something a little extra. Particularly – and I should stress this – in the area of graphic fidelity and games that will essentially play an awful lot prettier than games have previously.

Do you think PS4 Neo will be out before Project Scorpio in late 2017?

Good read. Nice to know that they never plan on leaving current PS4 owners behind in any way.

So does that mean ps5 is still coming in 2019-2021? That doesn't sound like the start of a post generational console model, more like mid gen premium consoles instead of cheaper slim designs.

Sony will let Microsoft go first again.

They will wait for The Scorpio's fully confirmed specs and a price, before opening their mouths.

I don't see how this can be fair or even ethical, but it works.

It won't replace the PS4 ... up until the point it actually does.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
