Looks like the Platinum currency is for in-game activities and related, while the Gold currency is awarded in connection with money spent. And the rewards associated with the two currencies are different. The discounts for Platinum are only 20%, while the Gold discounts are 40% or 50%. Similarly, the Platinum free games are the little games, whereas the real games/DLC are Gold.
It's a smart approach. I do hope they provide some way to partially transfer one currency to the other, though. It would be kind of frustrating if you had the wrong currency for whatever you wanted.
