The Platinum Points ARE meant for digital content. The games are just a bonus. A very distant carrot on a stick. That's why they are priced so high, why the coupons are so low in percentage, why there are so few of them, and why the Gold Points have a higher average of "bigger" games. The gold points are useful for more coupons and games, offer significantly better discounts than the Platinum points, and are useful for bigger games outside of MK8.
The way they tier the Gold points is smart too, because I can technically buy a bunch of $5 indie games and get a shit ton of points. Like I can by 6 $5 indie games and earn as many points as I would have buying one $60 game. And that's exploitable in every tier. If you buy something that is $50.01, you still get $60 points. Same with DLC. You buy $6 Smash DLC, and you just earned a bunch of points.
This is all much more well thought out than I gave them credit for. Especially since this is beginning. Once NX launches, I guarantee you that Platinum Points will be their achievement system for first party software. It's soon smart, because it's not an annoying notification (I hope) for meaningless accolades, but a personal objective to achieve that will actually award you monetary value. Let's just hope that they allow third parties to put these "achievements" in their games too. It achieves the same goals of giving games longevity without all the annoying stuff achievements bring about innately. That combined with the NX being digital only, meaning that every single penny you spend on the NX will contribute significantly to a big discount or a free game, and this shit is legit genius.
This is the core to NX and this is going to be MASSIVE. Seriously guys, this is exciting shit.
