Forums - General - What is the deal with blacked out text?

Maybe I should know this, but I do not.  Why do people black out some of their text so that you have to mouse scroll select it to read what it says?  Is some internet thing or site thing.  If you do this, what is your reasoning.  Just thought I would ask because I apparently do not get it.

it's mostly used to protect spoilers or to cover things that people could find offensive.

Like Slash said, it is a good way to censor foul language and spoilers. Also I think it is another way to make a joke.

I see I see. That makes sense to me. At first, I thought the mod were blacking it out, then I found that I could read it by selecting it realizing that it must have been on purpose. Well, I hate it if this was a dumb question.
