Forums - Microsoft - Lionhead Shutting Down. Fable Legends Cancelled.

Shouldn't really be surprised, that game has been taking forever to develop. Wasn't it announced almost 3 years ago by now?

Rare are probably shaking in their boots!

I would like to point out that this does not necessarily mean that Fable is dead. In fact, Microsoft's intention here might be to put Fable in better hands. Impossible to say, of course, but Microsoft has shown a desire to keep using older IP. Perhaps Fable Legends is not the direction they're looking for.

It's also quite possible that members of Lionhead will find other positions within Microsoft Studios. We might even see something new in the model of 343 Industries.

I'm interested to see if there is any followup to this.

For example? Phantom Dust? Ho ho ho. MS has shown the desire to keep thriving (older) IPs.

Hunting Season is done...

Killer Instinct was dead when Microsoft brought it back.  Gears and Halo both got brand new studios after their original studios were done with them, which means a lot of extra money invested for IP that are probably on the downside of their potential.

Sigh...

Shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter shooter.

Figures the one non shooter gets canned.

Why don't they cancel Halo or GoW instead.

Quantum Break, for example, isn't a mere shooter. Neither is ReCore, Crackdown, or Forza. Plus, why cancel highly successful IPs?

i'm sorry but do we even know what genre recore is suppose to be?  aside from the initial cgi (aka non-gameplay) trailer and the fact the game is no longer releasing early 2016 we know nothing about this title.

anyways - OT - this is quite surprising.  with the game already in beta it seems absurd to cancel the game and shutdown the studio right now.  would seem to me to be cheaper to finish the game now.  ms certainly seems to be pulling out of xbox quite quickly these days.

Going to miss Reaver.

Would have been nice if MS put Fable III back up on Steam and at least throw Fable II on there as well. Fable III wasn't received as well but I still liked it despite II being my absolute favorite out of the franchise.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

That's weird. MS needs more RPGs and more 1st party games, not less. I don't know what they're thinking.

They are obviously trimming

A mod on GAF wrote this.

Frankly with their continued move to make more PC games (including Forza 6 now), along with their push away from having Xbox One be a traditional console.  It seems likely that MS is truly moving away from the Xbox One as a platform, and instead focusing on making money.

That was a really good post, thanks for linking that.

Yep That Neogaf mod just stateing facts, sure does make it seem like MS is trimming down.

For thats goes TL:DR: Heres the short of it:

"Microsoft does not see themselves as a hardware platform owner anymore. As a result, their interest in developing games is no longer about establishing a diverse portfolio (even at a loss), but instead about just publishing games only if they make reliable money with no risk."

"If you were going to transition away from the hardware model but still wanted to publish the odd game and didn't want to shut down the division at all, this is exactly what you'd do."

"Besides these franchises, almost all of Microsoft's first-party partners are now working on Hololens, and it's not clear that Hololens is going to be a consumer focused gaming product during the Xbox One's lifespan."

1) MS are moveing away from hardware. Next Console they sell could just be a PC, where they ask you to use the windows store, and sell you a controller.

2) MS games could go multi plat (halo ect) (why not? if they dont care about selling you hardware, why not make profits selling the game)

3) Yep, if your focus was really on here & now, building franchises ect should be done, instead everyone is focusing on something not ment for console gameing, a product many years from ready. Why? it doesnt make sense, unless you want out of hardware.

Anyways... SteamBox PC aka Xbox Two, will just be a liveing room windows PC with a controller.

Doesn't make sense. Just doesn't.

It does if you dont care about Hardware sales.

Maybe MS dont want to make a Xbox Two, so they dont need a risky investment in a Fable 4 exclusive for a console they dont plan to make.

You play it safe and keep the bigger franchises (halo, gears, forza) that make you money, and shut everything else down.

MS will sell you a liveing room PC by the time Playstation 5 comes out, instead.

Tell you to use windows store to buy its games, and enjoy steam for everything else, and sell you a controller.

This dosent make sense......... The game was far ahead in development and impressions were good as far as I know, so i really doubt that the game was stuck in limbo or development hell. Why would they just burn money like this? Not to mention they are closing a famous studio of theirs, and Microsoft dont have many first party studios....

Wjhat the hell happened? This excuse they gave "We want to focus on games that fans are excited about" is obviously a big lie.I really wonder what happened.....

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
