I could see a future in which cars stop being as prevalent, but thinking that Venice is a model for how US cities could be is clear lunacy.

Someday, you won't need a car, you can have everything delivered via drones. And someday, that will help transportation infrastructure, by making space for other commuter options. But it's going to be a while before that happens, and the first change that will need to be made is better commuter transportation.

However, there will always be this idea that a car is luxury. Basically commuter transportation is like living with roommates, and having a car is like living by yourself. And at least for me, living by myself is better than anything.
