I kind of like the way Half Life 2 Episode 2 looks on max settings. The source engine is still going strong.

That wouldn't apply to the original post question, because HL2 has never been a technically advanced game, despite looking much better than games that actually are.

I would say... eh... probably Bioshock. The game has a lot of shader effects going on, and everything is very detailed.

Just giving a quick glance-over of system requirements on PC* suggests that Bioshock is the correct answer. A lot of people would say Call of Duty 4, but it's actually much easier to run.

*note: This isn't the best indicator ever because some games are better optimized than others. Assassin's Creed on PC actually has higher system reqs than Crysis, but it's just because Ubisoft blows at optimization. It's nowhere near Crysis technically.  However, Bioshock's devs had extensive PC experience and this shouldn't be the case.

Nope!

@sc94597

In what terms? Could we mention games that were astounding back at their time of release, or just the contemporary ones?

As for the contemporary one, Bioshock was a marvel (it's UE of course but the artistic style is overwhelming).
And back in its time CONKER Live (XBOX) and reloaded was breathtaking

 I meant contemporary.

On the console front this years most technically advanced game looks to be GoW2.

As for here and now I do want to say Bioshock as well.

But I wouldn't be surprised to here Uncharted or Gears.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.
