Twelfth session of The Abyss: Inside of the ruins of the dessert.

------------------------------------------

After reaching the oasus and stocking on potions and weapons, the team goes to the Ruins of Zao. It looks like a big underground dungeon, ful of bats, monster staues and some troll-like monsters. There a lot of pots and amphoras that are there just to decorate, and I spent quite some time trying to break them with Mieu's power to see what was inside. Must be those Zelda reflexes. Not a very complicated dungeon, so I take advantage of it and grind a lot. Mieu finds some kind of power that allows him to destroy rocks, so that's nice. Once I feel I have enough experience, I continue to the deepest part of the dungeon. There, Sync, Largo and Asch are doing something with Ion. The team ask the generals to give them Ion back, they say no, and they fight. Sync and Largo vs our protagonists, Asch is too lazy to join the fray. The battle is quite difficult despite my grinding, lucky that I was stocking healing items before the battle. After I defeat them, Asch calls his companions pathetics because of their defeat (then why didn't you join the fight?). They offer the team a deal, in exchange for leaving the generals go, they give them Ion back. If they don't accept, they blow up the ruins and everyone dies. Our protagonists accept the deal, and they exit the ruins. Largo seems to know natalia from somewhere, but for now there's not that much info. Once out, Ion thanks them for their help, and ell them he's been forced to do something fonon-related for them.

Once they exit the Zao Ruins, the team goes to Chesedonia to take a boat there. But suddenly, Luke starts to have one of those psycho headaches, and it seems like he's going to attack the team! Luckily he passes out. What the Hell, Luke IS being possessed, we need a exorcist! Will we find one next time?

Thirteenth session of The Abyss: Van's deception.

------------------------------------------

After reaching Chesedonia, the team goes to the Malkuth Consulate, to continue their travel to the endangered city. Once they are there, they are informed that Grants is already on Azelkuth, and that they should hurry. Then, Guy suddenly falls on his knees. Jade informs the team that Guy has been cursed, and that they should hurry up to get the boat and get far from Sync, the one who cursed him. So they inmediately go to the boat, and the influence Sync has over Guy dissapears.

When they arive at the naval port, the team talks about whatever they are going to do when they arrive to Azelkuth. Apparently is a really important mining city, that has been the center of a territorial dispute between Malkuth and Kimlaska for a long time now. And the sudden miasma emisions are poisoning the mines and the people there. The team thinks their main priority once they arrive is to evacuate the city. Luke, always being  the brightest of the group, still has no idea what to do. They have to cross the mountains to reach the city, so they decide to go across the Deo pass. It's a bit hidden on the map, so it takes me a while to find it, I take the time to grind a little (but I don't get a lot of exp, the level of the monsters is low here). Once there, Luke complains about their delay and says Ion shouldn't have come with them because Luke is the ambassador. Everybody gets annoyed with Luke for obvious reasons. He still wants to reunite with Van, again, not realizing his obvious evilness. When Ion needs to take a brake after climbing the mountains for a long time, and Luke just keeps being a brat, the team REALLY gets angry with him. But that will have to wait, because we find Legrietta on our way out of the pass. She says that the Score is making humanity weak, and that knowing everything it's going to happen in the future will make people dependent on that thing. Something like Lex Luthor's argument against Superman? Anyway, the team does not agree with her and they fight. Decent battle, I need to learn how to block and power up my attacks better. Anyway, I beat her, and she says to Tear to get away from "that reject", talking about Luke. It it thenwhen Jade explodes and accuses Legrietta to have resurrected some forbidden technology. Luke is some sort of clone, isn't it? Luke is exhasperated because nobody explains anything to him, and he still clings to the idea of Van telling everything that's going on (the kid is going to be shocked once the big reveal occurs).

They arrive at Azelkuth. And boy, it's worse that they've described. The wole towin is inside the hole of the mine, and the purple gas is everywhere, intoxicating everyone in the town. There is people on the ground half asphyxiated, just laying on the ground. Natalia goes o help one of them, and Luke says to her that she shouldn't get close to them because they are dirty and she could catch something. What an asshole. They introduce themselves and agree to rescue the last miners trapped inside of the deepest tunnels. Once they go there, one soldier tells them that the seventh fonon has been found, and that they need Tear's help to confirm it. The rest of the team keep their course and find the othr miners. Jade is really nervious because he doesn't see the vanguard anyhere. Luke falls to the ground with one of his headache episodes: he hears Asch telling him that he shouldn't be here and if Luke goes any deeper, he will put the whole city in terrible jeopardy. But the moment Luke sees Van, he ignores Asch's warnings. Luke and Ion find Van, and he asks Ion to open a special fonon door. Ion doesn't want to, but Van and Luke insist, so he opens the door. They enter on a giant room, very well lit despite the fact they're underground. Van orders Luke to enter inside a fonon machine, and he complies.

And then everything goes apeshit.

Tear runs to Jade to tell him that the guards were preparing a trap for her, and that Van's intentions are evil. And it turns out Asch is the one who helped Tear escape the guards! They quickly reunite the rest of the team and go in search of Van, Luke and Ion. Meanwhile, once Luke enters the machine, Van knocks Ion down. Luke does something on the machine, and the ground starts to crumble. Van finally abandons his façade and calls Luke "replica". Asch and the rest of the team appear, and Van uses one of those giant eagles to escape, and captures Asch too. Tear quickly uses her fonic songs to create an energy field around them. And then a cutscene shows the whole city falling down and sinking into the ground, while clouds of purple miasma hover over the giant gap where once was the city!

The team appears to be over a piece of ground floaring on a sea of miasma. Everyone is grieving and trying to reanimate the few people they can find, whith no avail. They hear a scream, and they see a little kid floating on a box, hurt and crying for his parents. He is too far and they can't reach him, so they can only watch him slowly sink into the poisonous miasma while crying for his parents. Damn, this game got really dark. Van is going to pay.

They find the Tartarus, that apparently can navegate in the miasma. Tear knows a city underground, and they go there. Apparently, long time ago, the miasma threatened to kill every living thing, so the elder Julia found a way to elevate the crust of the planet over the miasma, so that the people could be saved (and apparently this is secret, how do people forget this kind of cataclysmic event). The crust is supported by pillars, and by Luke's actions, the one under Azelkuth desintegrated, sinking the city. Thousands of lives lost, all because of Luke. Naturally, the guy has a freakout and starts blaming everyone else but himself. Everyone gets disgusted with him and leaves. We are left to explore this sea of miasma. It's practically empty, except for a piece of land on the southI can go to, and Yulia City. Once the team goes to the city, Asch appears and blames Luke for the tragedy. He also says to him that Luke is a clone of him, and that Asch was the noble from Kimlaska kidnapped seven years ago. I knew it was a clone! Luke tries to fight him, but loses, scripted battle.

Luke wakes up in Asch's mind. Appaently, they are the same people, so they are telepathically connected. Now I'm playing as Asch. More other day, this was exhausting.

Fourteenth session of The Abyss: Playing as Asch.

------------------------------------------

After waking up as Asch, I explore Yulia City. The underground town seems really big and futuristic compared to most of the medieval or mechanical-themed places we've visited so far. Asch talks with everyone on the city, reunites de team to get back to the surface. They put the Tartarus in some sort of energy current, and that makes the boat go up back to the sea. By the way, the explosion left a giant hole in the planet's crust, and all the sea water is going down. If this wasn't a magical world, I'd say all the water in the oceans would end up there and would dry the seas, causing something like a Mad Max morld. Only salt everywhere you go... Fortunately, this runs on magic logic, so the team can continue without problems. They decide to follow Van's activities, and go to the city of Belklend, where apparently they have been studying the art of cloning (it has another name in the game, but it's basically cloning, so for the sake of simplicity I'll call it that). I take the opportunity to explore with the Tartarus and go to various ports to get supplies. Luke and Tear are still on Yulia city, so I don't have my main healer and my main brawler, Asch is too slow for my taste .It gets too much damage, bad when I can't heal him at the same speed as before.

We reach the Belklend port, and then travel to the city, which is not on the coast. Once we reach the city, we go to the labs, and we apparently can enter without any kind of authorization, they must recognize Asch. Once there, the team meets a guy that says he helped on the kidnapping of Asch years ago. The scientist used something called fomicry to experiment and copy things, a substance that was initially created by Jade! I suppose his necromancing studies needed some of that, because he says using fomicry on living things is forbidden. The scientist says something about Van's preservation problem, and then shuts up when he realizes he said too much, and runs away. Isn't anyone going to stop him for interrogation? Guess not, he ran away. The team decides to go to the Ortion cavern, the place where fomicry is produced/extracted/synthezised. All this time, there's been a bit of tension in the group. Luke is still annoyed about the rest of the team going with Asch instead of him. Guy doesn't seem to like Asch that much and goes away (dammit, now I lose Guy the Guy? No fair), and Natalia is conflicted about him. After all, Asch is the guy she was in love with all this time, and it seems the feeling was mutual, but Asch doesn't want to go through that again because he thinks he's not the same person he once was. And there's a lot of moments between those two when they reember something from they childhood and wish for the good old times. They go to the cavern and explore the place a bit. For a place where this valuable product gets made, there's an awful lot of monsters in here, what did the workers do with them? They find two things in there: one, a machine that tells them Van is planing to produce a very big object with the fomicry (as big as a piece of a continent!) and two, a pair of cheagles. One is a clone and one is the original. The team talks about the risks both the original and the copy suffer through the procces, that could lead to progressive degeneration and death for them. When they are exiting the cave, a giant monster appears from the waters and attacks the team. It's a mix between a tentacle monster, a giant clamp and Zoidberg, all while calling to jelyfish reinforcements. I miss Tear and Luke, I have to spend a lot of my gels to keep the team alive during the battle because I can't heal as fast as I'd like.Once it dies, there's an earthquake, and Asch informs that the crust is still falling apart due to Luke's actions. Asch says the next pillar to fall will be the one close to St. Binah.

We go back to Luke, waking up in Yulia City. He wants to go back to the surface but he doesn't know how. He heard about the danger St.Binah is in, so he goes out searching for Tear. She is in some sort of inner garden (there is no sun underground, so only special flowers can grow). Tear says that even if he reaches St. Binah in time, he would have no idea how to solve the problem, and scolds him because he doesn't think for himself. You are right to do that Tear, he deserves it, but now it's not the time! But he gets affected by the criticism, and swears he will change into something better. In a cutscene, we see him cutting his long hair to simbolize his compromise to change who he is. It's a very anime-esque scene, but I can't stop thinking about what will the gardener when he finds out a bucket of hair all around the garden. They decide to go talk to Tear's granfather for help. More game another day.

Fifteenth session of The Abyss: Operation Rescue from the Chatedral.

------------------------------------------

After the garden scene, Luke and Tear go to see the chief of Yulia City, Tear's grandfather. And he's a very chill man. He doesn't seem to care very much that his grandson is destroying the world. As long as it's been told in the Yulia's Score, it's fiiiine. How many people were there, just a couple thousands? They were going to die anyway, the Score said so. Let him have his fun, Tear, don't be so paranoid. This guy is the opposite of Legrietta, she dislikes the fact people is too dependant of the Score, but this man just follows it blindly. Even Tear and Luke call him out on that. But anyway, they manage to find a teleporting place (after Tear learns some spells from the Third Hymn), and thanks to Tear's magic, they appear on the surface again. They appear in the Arami Springs, there are some caves there, some bats, some slime monster, some giant enemy crabs, and Guy! It's Guy the Guy! He's been waiting for Luke all this time (how did he know where was he going to appear?). Luke is very happy about this, and even thanks him his trust. Guy is clearly surprised about Luke saying thanks, and he is clearly shaken, fearing he fabric of space-time will be destroyed because this unnatural event. After exiting the caves, we find Jade, that tells the team Alice, Natalia and Ion have been kidnapped, and are being imprissoned in Daath.

Once the tam arrives to Daath, we have a first impression of the city. It looks huge! The chatedral seems as big as the palace from the beginning! We find Alice, that informs us that Natalia and Ion are captured inside of the Chatedral, on the Oracle Headquarters. Alice is definitively not happy Luke is back with the team, and neither is Jade. But Luke understands that regaining trust is hard, so he's not very offended about it. We find Alice's father, that tries to scame us, and we go inside the chatedral. There are a lot of soldiers there, and we have to trick them with some big bells. Once we rescue the two, we exit from there and we gather resources for the following travel. Short update, more other day.

Sixteenth session of The Abyss: Dark secrets and a new boat.

------------------------------------------

After the team goes back to the Daath Bay, they talk about their next move. Jade proposes visiting the emperor in Grand Chokmah, but he says they can't go with the Tartarus because they might think they have hostile intentions. They decide to dock on the broken bridge from the beginning of the game and continue all the way there by walking. However, while they were going to Rotherlo Bridge, the ship crashes with a seamine, and they need reparations before they can continue. They stop in Keterburg, the birthplace of Jade. It's a winter town, full of snow. It appears that it holds a lot of hotels and other tourist attractions, like a casino (I lost in poker twice and moved on). Jade tells some story about the emperor's lover, and that she might be the reason the town has so many recreational things in it.  They go to the governor to ask for the needed repairs for the boat. Once they reach the governor's house, they find Nephry there, Jade's sister and the governor of the town. She's surprised to see her brother, because there were rumours around that Jade had died in Aktzeriut. She promises help with the boat, and sends them all to the inn to get some rest. All but Luke. She asks Luke to meet her in private. Once they are alone, she tells him the origin story of the fomicry technology. Apparently, at the age of 9, Jade was a genius and created fomicry simply to fix one of his sister's dolls. Luke is impressed by that, but Nephry continues. She says Jade didn't really understood the importance between life and death, killing small monsters just for the heck of it, and that once his talents were discovered, they were adopted by an important family. He was then put under the tutelage of a professor that could use the seventh fonon. Because Jade couldn't do that, he admired her a lot, but one day one of his experiments malfunctioned and accidentally killed the professor. He tried to make a replica of her, but instead he made some sort of monster. Jade should have watched Full Metal Alchemist before trying a stunt like that. Nephry asks Luke to take care of her brother. When Luke goes back to the team, Jade asks Luke about his discussion with his sister, and guarantees Luke he has no intention of resurrecting the proffesor anymore, simply because whatever the result of the cloning would be, it wouldn't be the same person. The next day, the repairs are finished, and the team goes on their way.

They reach the broken bridge and they walk to the Theor Forest. Once there, some soldiers stop the group and ask Jade to come with them. Jade goes with them, and after what seems like a long time, something goes wrong. The team decides to follow Jade, but there are some wounded guards, and they say the oracle knights are here! After a stealth section I got tired with and just fought everyone on my way, they find the oracle knights. Largo appears and tries to ambush the team, but Natalia manages to keep him under controll. Then, out of nowhere, Guy tries to attack Luke! It must be that curse, haven't they cured it already? There's an earthquake, and Natalia manages to find Sync and snipes him, like a boss! Guy falls to the ground unconscious. The Oracle Knights ask them to give Ion, but then reinforcements arrive, and they have to run away. The team enters the city with the woulded Guy, and send them to the hospital with Ion, so they can finally eliminate that curse. Tear is very confused about the curse, and says Guy couldn't have attacked Luke if he didn't have an intent to kill him in the first place. So Guy hates Luke? That's a first, he's been the only one that trusted Luke after his return. What's going on? Luke has a bit of a tantrum, but it's quickly shut down by Tear. The team goes to meet the emperor, who is a friend of Jade. Once there, the emperor Peony informs the team that the town of St. Binah is in danger of sinking into the abyss, and he can't send troops because it could be interpreted as an act of war. Luke asks the emperor to go himself, and he agrees. They go to St. Binah, but not before going back to get Guy. He has been healed of the cursed slot, but he's sad. Luke apologizes in advance, but Guy tells him it's not his fault. Apparently, Guy came from a village that was destroyed by Luke's family during the war. Wanting revenge, Guy entered at the service of the Fabre's family searching for an oportunity to get even, but he never did. He says he's sorry and the wants to keep being on the team. Eveyone's glad nothing happened, and thus, they go to St. Binah.

Once they reach the town, they start evacuating the city, but they are attacked by one of the machines of Dist. They keep getting sillier and sillier, but nonetheless it's a decent fight. Once it's beaten, Dist retreats, but his interruption causes half of the population of St. Binah to get trapped when the ground starts sinking. The team decides to go to a place where someone was developing a flying machine, to rescue the remaining townspeople. They go to Sheridan, the city of craftsmen, and they try to find someone to ask about the flying machine. They find some people that say the machine was stranded in the desert, and the pilot might be in danger. So the team goes there, fights a dinosaur (of course), and rescues the ship and the pilot. They explain the situation and why they need the machine, and the owners give it to them. The ship is broken, so they have to repair it by adding some of the pieces of Tartarus. We won't be able to use that boat again. A bit underwhelming that goodbye, that ship has been around since the beginning, and now we don't even get a goodbye scene, it's just "hey, we have a planecopter now, cool". So they get the planecopter, they rescue the townspeople before St.Binah sinks, and they bring them to Yulia City. More another day.

Seventeenth session of The Abyss: War! Huh, yeah! What is it good for?

------------------------------------------

After landing in Yulia City, the team goes to talk with the governor. Apparently, now is bad that pieces of continents are falling to the depths of the planet, as supposed to before, when it was okay before the Score said so. After a long bit of exposition and technobabble (I don't get the magic stuff in this game, sol let's move on) they decide to go check some places where they think Van has done something to weaken the pillars and sink the continents. First, they go to Shurrey Hill, a place beneath the surface of the planet, full of trees that apparently don't need the Sun to survive (how can it be everything so greenish underground). After a couple of easy puzzles, we enter a secret place. It's full of hellish monsters that were surprisingly easy to defeat. The team needed to reverse some of the actions of Van, and for that, they need to break some seals. I was thinking all the time that it was a trap, that once all the seals were broken, Van would storm the building and so something evil. But no, Van had entered before, and Luke and Tear manage to repair what was broken.

They exit the underground by using the power of the sephiroth, and once they are on the surface again... war.

We get a cutscene showing hordes and horders of Malkuth and Kimlaska-Lavandier fighting each other, apparently thousands. I love the fact that the infantry looks like roman soldiers, with swords, spears and shields, but the vehicles are laser-powered. The cannons can blow up infantry units like if they were nothing, why do they even have them in open field? This is fighting tanks with 16th century infantry, the same effect. Save soldiers and make more landboats. Also, they have flamethrowers. And meanwhile, the team is lookin at this from the planecopter.

When did the war start? They were only gone for a couple of hours at least, and now the continent is full of thousands of deployed troops? So sudden. But more importantly, the pillars that held that continent are gone, and in any moment that land might fall to the bottom of the planet, killing thousands -or even millions- of soldiers and civilians alike. And nobody can organize an evac because they are too busy with the war! Luke says all this is insane, and I agree, Van is a lunatic! He's mad with power, he's crazy, he's insane, he's coco for cocopuffs! They decide to split up the team. Luke, Tear and Jade will go to Engeve to save the civilian population, while Guy, Alice and Natalia try to organize a truce to stop the fighting.

Team 1 goes to Engeve to evacuate the citzens. They decide that, because the Gran Chokmah is completely closed and turned into a fortress during wartime, they need to bring the people to a neutral place: Chessedonia. They have to cross the battlefield with a lot of civilians, risking to be attacked at any moment. After a couple of fights with both armies, they reach Chessedonia.Team 2 goes to Malkuth to try stop the fighting, but they find general Cecille. She says Maestro Mohs, the one with the authority of stopping the war went to Chessedonia. That's not suspicious at all. While going there, the team is also ambushed by some Oracle Knight soldiers, but they are quickly dispatched. Both teams reunite in Chessedonia and try to find someone who can stop the war. They find both Mohs and Commander Almandine. Natalia and Luke offer themselves to explain all the misunderstandings and try to put an end to the war, but Mohs won't have any of it. He says Natalia is not really the Princess of Kimlasca-Lavandier, that apparently an attendant switched babies and Natalia isn't really blood related to the king. His argument is also based on the fact that the queen's hair was black and the king's is red, but Natalia is blonde. He then says that if she goes backto her kingdom, she will be punished as a traitor. This makes Natalia go into shock, but I don't believe it. That man is obviously evil and wants nothing more than to continue the war. Also, even if she wasn't the biological daughter, where would the original princess be? This looks really suspicious. The team goes to talk to Waluigi to ask him to take care of the refugees of the war, and Waluigi accepts. But the team quickl discovers that Chessedonia is sinking too! They can't catch a break! They go to the Zao Ruins to fix it, but first Luke receives a message from Asch to meet him at the oasis. He asks Luke if he's been getting memories from other people recently. Oh, no, now Asch is the one that needs an exorcism. Asch says that they can try to recover some of te pillars remotely, and then he goes away, saying heneeds to spy on Van's activities more. They go to the Zao Ruin, they defeat a giant hybrid of scorpion, dinosaur and skeleton, and repair whatever Van altered, but Chessedonia still ended up falling down.

They go back to Chessedonia to pick up the planecopter (I love the reaction of the guy in charge of the dock, he just apologises due to the inconiniences of not being able to go on a boat, when there is no ocean). They go to Daath to recover Ion. They overhear a conversation between Mohs and Dist, and discover a couple of useful thins: Dist and Mohs have their own agenda aside of Van, and they need Ion to restart the war. They find Ion and they read the Score to see what possible things is Van going to do, and they realize one thing: Luke doesn't apear on the Score at all! They are detected by the soldiers and they run, but Mohs and Dist use the planecopter's pilot as a hostage. They got captured and brought to Baticul, and separate them. Luke and Natalia are met by some soldiers, and offered poison to kill themselves, becase they have been sentenced to death. But Tear rescues them, thanks to Asch's help. The team confronts Mohs and the king on the throne room. Mohs acuses Natalia of being a traitor due to the ressentment of not being the real princes. And the king buys it! Seriously, how can he believe it? That's her daughter, and Mohs wants to execute her, even if she's not your biological daughter, you wouldn't want to let her be killed! What is going on? Suddenly, Asch appears and tells the team to run, he'll cover them. More game other day.

Eighteenth session of The Abyss: Traumas, traumas everywhere.

------------------------------------------

Okay, so it's been a while since I last played this game. When I started this again, I hoped I hadn't interrupted an important sequence. So what is the first thing that the team does? Run away for their lives from Baticul, as the king is ordering the army to capture Natalia (his own daughter, until she discovered she may not be of royal blood) for crimes she didn't commit. My sense of timing is as impecable as always. :(

Asch had managed to alert the people of Baticul of this, and while the team is trying to escape, the civilians are blocking their way, risking their lives for Natalia, whom may or may not be of royal blood, but they help her anyway. One general in particular strikes a woman trying to get to the team, and Asch appears and beats him down. Asch then says to her that she kept her promise from all those years ago, and that she should toughen up in order to change the country together. The team goes to Inista Marsh, since the rest of the world is litteraly falling apart, and while exiting Baticul we see tons of people in the bridge saying goodbye to Natalia and wishing her the best of luck. Poor Natalia, what a traumatic day for her.

To reach their destination, they need to cross a swamp full of monsters. The place is full of rafflesias, giant plants that grow very large and smellyy flowers. Appparently, that place is the prision of some sort of abomination that was too strong to kill, so it was imprisoned there because it's allergic to the rafflesias's spores. The team, and specially Natalia, is shaken ue to the events that unfolded on Baticul. Guy tries to cheer her up, but she really doesn't improve that much. The team finds the monster and, well, it looks like a monster? I don't even know what is supposed to be, an evil cat with thorns and a devil tail, a plant-like monster that has rotten because of the swamp, but the thing doesn't seem that strong. It takes ten-fifteen seconds of punishement without reacting then it attacks and leaves hald of my team with ten HP. So nope, not fighting this thing, don't want to lose all my gel potions. On the scripted scenes, the team manages to get it under control by throwing rafflesia polen to it and Tear's fonic arts.

They get out of the swamp and go to Belklend to find a guy named Spinozza, that apparently worked with Van on the subject of replicas. In there, the team finds themselves in the pressence o Van! What is he doing there? IIs this the final battle? No, he just talks about how he hates the Score and how he plans to substitute all mankind with replicas, no biggie. How on Earth did it take so long for them to notice he was a villain, again? Asch appears for a brief moment, but it seems that neither side wants a fight there, so they both withdraw. Van mentions that Gu used to work fr him, and the team goes all suspicious, but at this point in the story, do we really need more trust issues? It doesn't last long, though. Asch gives Jade a forbidden book, given to him by Ion. It contains crucial information about the planet's core, and after a bit of technobable, the team decides to build a special fonon machine, and they go to the Fon Machine Laboratory to get someone to make it. They get the help from a pairof scientists and the gobernor of the city, but the guy Spinozza heard the conversation and went to tell it to Van.
