Considering the RoI, I feel like Microsoft's marketing wasn't as effective as Sony. At the end of the day, sales justify the means.



Sony had far more marketing. When I was in the US, damn the BO3 ad, just everywhere! And star wars wasn't too far behind. I saw 10 PS4 ads for 1 Xbox One ad. 



Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Thinking of the timing of the ads during The Force Awakens, Sony did pretty well doing it without going overboard. They spent really well plus they get to promote Uncharted 4 on some The Force Awakens theaters. Win-win imo.
