Forums - Microsoft - Rumor: Microsoft considering a smaller, cheaper digital-only Xbox to compete with the Apple TV

25 million apple TVs only, when PS4 has sold significantly more in just over 2 years. Not entirely sure these TV streaming boxes are all that big of a market worth getting into.

In May 2013 it was reported at 13 million with half in the past 12 months, in January 2015 that number was 25 million, so about 19 were sold in roughly 3 years. A new figure will likely be given in the next few months which would likely put it over 30 million. When u factor in Roku, Amazon, Google sales figures, it's well over 50 million and growing.

This is a big mistake. Associating Xbox with TV will only further damage the brand. Just name it something else, why does everything with entertainment need to be branded as xbox?

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Microsoft no longer does this.. Xbox Music.. Xbox Movies etc.. all been renamed ..    I don't think they would call it Xbox TV..  More Xbox Mini or Xbox Play or something like that..

Not true at all, the streaming box market is pretty large and growing. Between Apple, Roku, Google & Amazon, over 30 million units were sold globally just in 2014. Also as of Q1 2015 the combined install base in the US was over 40 million. It's definitely a market to look out for.

If it's similar to what PSTV does where you can stream your games to any room then it's worth it. I think this should be standard for consoles from now one. I shouldn't be regulated to playing only on one TV. Soon as PSTV goes on sale again I'm getting it.

Ditch the optical drive, ditch the mechanical drive, make the SoC smaller, sell it for $200.
Maybe even go $150 if you don't include any accessories, only a TV remote.

Let it be digital only and still have the capability for emulating your digital Xbox 360 (And hopefully eventually, original xbox games.)

And then watch the sales pickup, especially in low-income nations.

If it's cheap to make, it generates profits/doesn't bleed money and there's a chance it could sell, I say why not?

Making it all digital would actually not benefit low income nations since we barely have any decent internet to begin with.
