You're kidding using it as DVD player. You think Sony would allow you to watch burned formats? Nope. If you plan to use it as PS2 as well, you might as well get a $30 DVD player + the PS2. The extra $30 is worth it to avoid burning out your laser on the PS2.

I've been watching burned DVDs regularly on my fat PS2 for 4 years no problems.

That's weird.  I got my PS2 on launch, returned it cuz it was scratching my games, and received the next version a month later but it totally does not read any burned formats at all.  Is your's the NTSC version?  Did you mod it?

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

I can watch burned DVDs on my PS2 as well. NTSC, unmodded, and not a launch model.

A multi-region DVD player cost me £20 off Amazon. It'll play imported DVDs from anywhere in the world plus burned discs. There really isn't any need to pay more than that.

I wouldnt waste my PS2 motor on DVDs, it may kill the thing. Either way if you can buy a DVD player now and a PS2 later 4 games.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

i probably watched more than 100 hours of dvds on my ps2 and the motor didnt break.

i would get a ps3. it plays dvds and blu ray. the 360 also plays dvds.
and you buying a dvd player in 2008? Lol, how did you live with VHS for the last 8 years.

I would definitely recommend the PS2 as a DVD player, and I'm gonna be the first to say that I actually don't mind using the PS2 controller :x You get used to it really fast xD. The picture quality is ok, and the features are mediocre, but it is a game console as well, so there is a good side to that, and there are a ton of amazing games for dirt cheap :)

If you have the money to spare, pick up a 20g or 60g PS3. Not only is it one of the best DVD Up scalers, it'll play PS2 and obviously PS3 games, then you get the additional blu-ray drive in case your interested in that stuff :P
