It's really no different when it comes to comparing a Toyota and a BMW. Saying how Toyota is PWNING BMW would only get people saying.. "hmmm, so what?" both same product, but focusing on very different people. |
when a company releases a product and people have a choice (360, ps3, wii) then they are fighting for your dollar. Every wii sold is a ps3 that could of been sold or a 360. that means they are all in the same gen no matter what time frame they came out. every dev that makes 5 games on wii and 1 for ps3 is a loss for sony. if u want to agree or not the wii is the reason why sonys sales and microsofts sales are so soft.
If someone is looking for a car and they want a BMW then they get it over Toyota. its a car both are trying to sale. one is better, or better looking (as with ps3 and wii) but they are both cars that drive. a sale for BMW is a loss for Toyota no matter how u put it. and thats the same for wii and ps3 and xbox no matter when they came out.
I see generations as referring to hardware, not to date ranges. The PS2 had a longer life, but that does not make it part of the latest generation.
If you go just by dates, the 7th generation started when the XBox 360 launched. Since then, the best selling console has been the PS2 with 27M+ consoles sold. It is quite possible that the PS2 will outsell the XBox 360 over the 360's lifetime.

Every Wii sold is NOT a lost sale for PS3/Xbox. Lots of people will be buying both. The Wii doesnt meet all the needs of the hardcore gamer, not to mention they are missing out on HD gaming. A Xbox sale is a missed sale for the PS3 but the Wii is a different market. Its like saying that someone buying an electric scooter is a lost sale for Harley Davidson.
Not EVERY wii sale is a ps3 360 sale lost, but neither is every 360 sale a PS3 sale lost. If you say that the wii isn't competing at all, then this gen looks pathetic from a sales point. This far into the generation and only 28 million consoles sold? That would be pathetic.
Neither the PS3 or the 360 is selling like an industry leader, and if the wii wasn't around (or isn't competing in this gen) that would just mean that this gen is gimped. But if you count the wii in, then this gen is performing very well sales wise. People obviously are choosing to buy a wii over a 360 or PS3, or those two consoles, or at least one of them, would be selling like an industry leader.
