Japanese electronics makers shrink screens

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Japanese flat-panel television manufacturers are shifting their focus to smaller models due to low consumer demand in North America and the weakening dollar, according to a published report.

A story in the Tuesday edition of the Nikkei Business Daily quoted Sharp Corp. President Mikio Katayama as saying, "We changed the strategy in July because of a plunge in North American sales of large-screen TVs."

A decline in consumer demand for televisions with screens of 40 inches or more is leading companies such as Sharp, Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.  to focus on models with screens between 26 and 40 inches, the Nikkei said.

The manufacturers are also blaming global credit-market worries and U.S. dollar weakness for eating into profits.

In July, Sharp had remodeled production facilities in Mexico with plans to produce models with screens between 40 and 50 inches for the North American market, the Nikkei said. But in the wake of the economic slowdown, it now plans to sell 20% of the LCD panels made there to other TV manufacturers.

In addition, Sony , which had planned to position televisions with 40-inch screens or larger as key products in the North American market, may also now emphasize models with screens between 26 and 37 inches, the Nikkei said.

To be honest, I don't see the appeal of a 40 inch+ size TV unless you have a VERY big living room and all the money in the world. I own a 32" TV and I don't see the use of having a larger TV.

I mostly agree, but I think 40'' or 42'' is still reasonable for widescreen TVs. Not sure what kind of TV you have, but 32'' is/was a pretty common size for 4:3 SDTVs. When you take widescreen into account, you need about a 40'' widescreen to equal the height of a 32'' standard TV since TVs are measured on the diagonal. Upgrading from a 32'' SDTV to a 32'' HDTV will actually get you a smaller picture for non-widescreen content. So 40'' isn't all that huge by HDTV standards (though still on the bigger side of things).

Chrizum, I thought the same thing when I brough a 32" HDTV into my apartment and I was wrong. Now I can't see a need for anything significantly larger than that (like the over 40" screens), but I could see how someone who is neither rich nor in possession of a massive livingroom may still find a larger screen useful.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

40 inches is fine to me. Hell im glad they are focusing on 40'', maybe they will lower the price because they will be massed produced?

This can only mean good things for the progress of HD-TV and the associated peripherals.
