Late 2014, a successor to the game Fat Princess, an adorable strategy-action-capture-the-flag styled Playstation title, was announced called Fat Princess Adventures, an equally adorable title with less capture-the-flag mechanics and more hack ‘n slash/Gauntlet Legends like gameplay. Neat!
We approached the console, grabbed a controller and one of the booth reps, and started on an epic 30 minute run through. After spending a few minutes with the game, I started feeling the Fat Princess nostalgia come bubbling up in waves, the old strategies and game mechanics still relevant with the addition of a very familiar class system. The only difference to mention here was the process of changing into different classes mid game. As the game has turned into a story driven campaign like play through, the “class stations” are no longer a thing. Instead, as you progress you hit checkpoints which then serve as your mode of changing classes, whether it be a warrior, ranger, mage, or engineer.
Though the classes handle and act similarly to their previous selves, there are, of course, new features, abilities, skill, and methods of taking down your opposition (which are NPCs, not other players). For instance, the engineer now wields a hammer type weapon with a special skill that allows you to throw bombs, a nice one-two punch to knock out enemies. Charge your bombs and watch your engineer flick out a ninja style spread of explosives, super effective for handling hordes of trash mobs you’ll encounter on your journey. These bombs can be swapped out depending on other items acquired through your epic questing and adventuring, including poison bombs, electric stun grenades, and well.. you get the idea.
Which brings us to the next big step forward this game introduces to old and new fans of the title: equipment and the upgrading mechanics. As you go throughout the campaign, you’ll find new weapons, armors, and accessories to further customize your character that will give you new variations of abilities, damage, and status effects on the enemies. And when it comes to the boss fights, yes, you’ll need to be at your peak.
Over the time we had a chance to try out the game, it was fun and the customization and rewards you get along the way definitely means you’ll be entertained until the end. Best part, for me at least, is it’s 4 player local and/or internet based cooperative play. I can tell this will be a fan and party favorite when it’s available come later this year!
