Forums - Gaming - Sony's Steinberg: We'll be marketing GTAIV as well.

Geoff Keighly recently interviewed Sony's Scott Steinberg on his show Gametrailers TV at Gametrailers.com. At around the 10:20 mark in the show, Scott and Geoff start discussing GTAIV, during which Scott says:

No, I don't think [we're really concerned]. The PlayStation fanbase has grown up with Grand Theft Auto as a part of the PS2. I think that's a part of the expectation that a great game under the GTA brand will be available day and date as it is; the exact same game. The content they're talking about is maybe shipping in the Fall, we're not really sure. Quite frankly we'll get behind GTAIV with a lot of marketing as well, and soon after that is MGS4.

Of course, just recently Microsoft's Shane Kim said that they will "own" the launch of GTAIV:

"We already own it, I believe, from a content standpoint, because we have the exclusive episodes," he said. "And so Xbox 360 is still going to have the ultimate experience for GTA IV. But we have to make sure the customers know that."

For a long time many believed that Microsoft was going to exclusively market GTAIV in NA, much like they had with Madden last Fall. However, now it seems that this is not the case, and it brings me to the point of the thread:

Who do you think will own the launch of GTAIV, from a hardware perspective?

Personally, I think that the ps3 will sell more overall, like it's been doing since December. The GT5P bundle combined with GTAIV in Europe should really boost sales, and in NA, the release of GT5P just two weeks before GTAIV should also give the ps3 an edge, albeit a very small edge.

However, a price cut for the 360 in NA could flip things around. If the price is dropped by $50 or so across all SKUs, then the 360 will take the launch quite comfortably in the US, though the release of GT5P will keep the ps3 from falling too far behind. The ps3 should still take the European market by a large amount, and should still come out ahead overall.

I just don't think that the exclusive episodes are going to sell it to potential buyers.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the PS3 version will sell more. [Just like DMC4]

@DMeisterJ: DMC4 is pretty popular in Japan, compared to the rest of the world. GTAIV is not, and without Japan to carry it, there's no way the ps3 version could sell more, at least not this year.

However, from a hardware perspective you'd be right on the money, imo.

Yeah with Sony marketing the game as well, I dont see the Xbox360 blowing the PS3 out of the water with hardware sales.

A price cut will help in someways, but hurt in others as people might see that as desperation from the 360. With a little over a month until launch, I don't see RRoD worries easing at all. There hasnt been a point yet where people can confirm models picked up in stores are RRoD free.

We don't know what the content is, how big it is, how much it will cost, and exactly when it will come out. Even Rockstar themselves haven't pinpointed what the exclusive content will be. They said they will adjust to whats selling and how much.

GTAIV might just end up being momentum vs momentum at this point, with pricing playing less of a difference in NA as I thought before and no difference in Europe (look at Amazon UK right now, the 360 seems to be ranked lower now than before the price cut.)

We'll have to wait and see in NA, but at this point I don't see a $50 price cut eliminating the PS3 with MGS4 and GT5P in the months before and after GTA is released.

yea i saw that video, and he was stressing the content so much.

i do think it will sell more on the 360, devil may cry ps3 sold more than the 360 all thanks to japan. but i think gta is a different story.

in grand theft auto's case, if someone owns both consoles, it would be pointless to buy it for the ps3.

VGC has the Japan numbers for GTA:SA, GTA3, and GTA:VC at 360k to 470k which would provide a nice little boost for the PS3 version. Though when your talking about 10 million it isn't that much. (still is a decent number)

Read the bolded parts together. That makes me wonder.

MS will advertise the hell out of this but its good to see sony doing it as well. Sony should just continue the "black blob" commercials and have clips from gta4, gt5p, mgs4, and socom. Then end it with "now starting at 350. Wishful thinking on my part but itd be a great move on theirs as well.

i think gta iv can move some ps2 owners to upgrade to a ps3.

most played previous gta games on their ps2, and if there looking to buy gta iv, theyll prolly buy a ps3, a sony console.

I'm pretty confident hardware wise the PS3 will sell more

software wise im not too sure, I'm leaning towards the 360 to sell more
