What are your expectations of Guitar Hero Live? Rock Band 4?

We haven't really talked much about these games on this site.

Rock Band of course is just more Rock Band - but only on PS4 / Xbox One and has a more expensive band kit than Guitar Hero Live - but Rock Band 4 evidently is also backwards compatible and lets you carry-over some DLC. Also has drum sets (sidebar: I always thought the drum kit was over-rated)

Guitar Hero Live looks to be almost an entirely new animal. Different controller. Live action cutscenes instead of 3D rendered characters and environment. Releases on last-gen and WiiU (and evidently mobile somehow too?). Seems to have a larger amount of content at the ready too.

To me Rock Band 4 looks suspiciously too much like the Rock Band I already played - whereas Guitar Hero Live strikes me as a really new experience - one that doesn't just reintroduce the genre, but reinvigorates it.

I predict Guitar Hero LIve will score better, and sell better than Rock Band 4.

What are your thoughts?

Guitar Hero changed, but they changed what didn't need changing. In fact, nothing needed change at all - the only reason why this genre ever fell "stale" was because of oversaturation, no more.

Honestly, every time I've seen anything Guitar Hero Live related I always thought it looked like a really bad game. Rock Band 4 looks really good, but then again they're not releasing it on my system... *sigh*

I'd agree it didn't necessarily need change to be good, but I think these games do need change to really sell.

Do you think it looks bad because of the live action cutscenes?

It turned me off at first - but honestly graphics tend to matter very little in rhythm games like this.

Track list on Guitar Hero Live is shaping up to be really solid. Hands on impressions of the new controller are pretty favorable.

To a large number of people these games are like Wii Sports. Fun to invest in the HW once to play, but unless there's something significantly new on the table it's not worth buying into.

From what I've seen, Rock Band 4 is getting alot more preorders than Guitar Hero Live. I get the feeling that DLC and instrument backwards compatibility are the main reasons for that. Personally I'm more likely to get Rock Band 4 than Guitar Hero Live, Guitar Hero Live forces me to buy a new guitar controller (so I have to pay $100 for the game and controller bundled), and then I have to learn all new muscle memory in order to play well since they changed the layout with their new guitar controller. Why would I do that when I can just grab a copy of Rock Band 4 after a few months once it's price has gone down some, use my old Rock Band instruments, and play all of my old Rock Band DLC?

it's the big reason i'm willing to get RB4 right away.  i probably would have gotten it either way but their effort to maintain my dlc deserves my respect and money.  plus i just really like the games.

as far as GH is concerned,.. i'm curious to see how this reviews.  honestly, when playing the backgrounds do little to nothing for me.  only in RB beatles did i ever pay any mind to them but those ones were really nice.  it changes things up but not in a way i care about.  frankly, loosing character customization is a big negative to me and honestly i was a bit annoyed by the "live" thing by the end of the announcement trailer.  it's not like the "live" is actually me and the acting was kind of annoyingly bad and douche, imo.
