edit: We dont know how many subs, because SE never release that data. The only thing that we know this year is that SE got more total revenue, +5M registered users, and FF14 ARR is the main reason about the increase of that revenue. We don't know about china, but let me tell you this, they can handle that info in whatever way they want. |
You seem offended. That's rather sad and that's coming from a fellow XIV player.
This is the most recent source...."dood."
“Three major MMO titles—“FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN,” which began operation last August, “DRAGON QUEST X,” which was launched in August 2012, and “FINAL FANTASY XI,” which has entered its thirteenth year of operation—maintain nearly 1,000,000 paying subscribers all together, and have established a solid revenue base.” (pg 4)
Either way, the figure is meaningless PR. No one cares how many registered accounts there are.

You really don't see the problem in your post ?
"Last August". Your source is totally outdated, by at least one year.

It's nice to see FF14 is doing so well. For them to hit the 5 million sales milestone around the same time as Guild Wars 2 (which has also been a pretty big success), despite releasing a year later and having a sub, is pretty damn impressive. Would be interesting to know how many subs FF14 has right now. Pre-3.0 i'd have guessed around 500k~, but i haven't a clue where it'd be sitting right now.

Let me hit you with some knowledge because you seem unaware of this fact. FYI, that report was released in March 2014, the end of the last fiscal year.
edit: somebody already beat me to it. lol

He's just trying to downplay some good news. It's sad because it's "coming from a fellow FFXIV player", he says.

True, but Jagex makes a lot of money thanks to them because of ad-revenue. Runescape also has an optional membership fee by the way. I don't know the actual numbers but there were times when there were over one million paying members active.

Runescape is a browser game, that would make it very accessible to play.

This game deserves success! Before I started playing this game, I didn't really like the idea of a subscription model. Even after I tried the beta, I wasn't so sure. But the frequent and substantial content updates, the lack of microtransactions that affect game balance/pacing, and just the overall quality of the game means that I actually hope it stays subscription-based going forward.
