Forums - Gaming - For those that played it - What is the draw of the Lufia series of JRPG's?

I have just been in the mood for good ole JRPG's, something I put on the back burner for awhile.  While I wait for all these current gen JRPG's Im revisiting the Silver and Golden age of the genre for any gems I missed out on.

Last month I completed Romancing SaGa 3, which was such a good game, and I followed that with the original SaGa Frontier for PS1, which was much better than Frontier 2. Im taking a break from SaGa, and I want to find a SNES JRPG. Currently I'm looking at SE's final SNES game Treasure Hunter G and Lufia, a series up there with SMT in regards to JRPGs I heard/Read about, but never dabbled in.

Whats up with Lufia? Whats the draw? From what I read it seems pretty generic.

Are these standalone games?

Any turds or games ok to skip?

Good starting point?

Are they challenging?

I LOVED the snes lufia 1&2.... they are connected as far as story goes.... in part 1, you play the end of part 2 in the beginning. Just the end sequence, then the game has its own story following the son of the second games hero, I believe....if that made sense...it's been a very long time since I've played them.... so part 2 is a prequel of sorts... if you can play them, I'd highly recommend them.

Mod edit (Leadified) - added some spoiler text -

I remember renting and playing a good chunk of the second one. From what I remember, typical SNES RPG action & some really tricky puzzles.
