I think most people mistake "Appeared on the Genesis" for "Sega-owned."

In case you're talking to me, I know that Wonder Boy was developed by Westone and not in-house at Sega. However, I think they had a 2nd-party-relationship with Sega, and according to wikipedia Sega also owns the rights to characters and names, so the Wonder Boy franchise is essentially Sega-owned. And Phantasy Star is Sega like Zelda is Nintendo.

The comment wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular really.  It's just a tad bit unreasonable to compare Nintendo and Sega in terms of mascots.  Sega has quite a few, but Nintendo has hundreds.
