Dang that was awesome! And to think we're not yet done!
As for some quick impressions, the online was a lot smoother than I thought and the longest it took to start a game was merely a minute. Only hiccup is the results screen taking a while to show up sometimes, but eh not a big deal. As for the gameplay, using motion controls to manipulate vertical camera movement while the stick does horizontal movement, essentially splitting up a task, just didn't work for me at all with my brain already having to process all the other things going on. Once I turned motion controls off though it controlled very well! Love the squid mode especially and how fast n stealthy it is! Speaking of, while the map doesn't actually show where enemies are, it's in real time so you can get an idea based on where enemy ink is currently being laid down, that I really liked so I'd never be lost from the action and can get the jump on the enemy! Now for the weapons, I already knew the machine gun-like ones would be my go to as they are in every shooter I've played, and that remained the case of course! Just felt good and versatile! The roller was no slouch though, covering up big batches of enemy ink in no time was pretty darn satisfying! The sniper I haven't used yet, as I generally don't use sniper weapons, but I'll be sure to try it in the second session!
So much fun!
This game is day 1 for me!
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
My random thoughts:
The gyro controls are great, I practiced with metroid blast for a couple weeks on and off before hand so by the time I was in the game it just felt natural to me. I used the splattershot and won every single match I played in and ranked first with the most kills in 90% of them. I rotated lobbies about 4 times.
Swimming through the ink feels great. Whenever I encountered an enemy I would immediately dive into the ink and flank them, using the right analog to keep them somewhat centered then popping up and using gyro to fine tune my aim and KO them.
I like how you can aim while you're still in the air when super jumping to your teammates. It's a great way to get a good survey of the map and plan out your route.
Normal jumping didn't feel great to me, it was slow and low in both squid and inkling form.
Couldn't really get much going with the splat charger, didn't cover a lot of ink and was hard to KO with it.
It's a shame everyone is saying the gyro controls are shit and to turn them off, when they're obviously just not used to them. In my opinion they offer a far superior aiming experience to dual analog and even wiimote. I found myself using the gyros ~80% of the time.
One thing I need to master is quick 180 degree turns by moving backwards and hitting Y to recenter the camera. Died a couple times to people I knew were behind me but couldn't quite react quick enough.
