Forums - Gaming - Morpheus: “Works With PS4 Very Tightly” It's Use “Will Become Much Broader”

Shuhei Yoshida has always been at the forefront of the development of Project Morpheus. You could say that it’s basically his pet project. In an interview on Official PlayStation Magazine UK, the jolly SCE Worldwide Studios President talked on the interaction between the VR headset and the console, and on how its scope will broaden in the future:

VR will definitely broaden in terms of its use: gaming is just the start. Already we’ve been asked to support other industries, but we can’t say yes to everyone. We’re focusing on making VR work with games and with our existing partners.

Morpheis is designed to work with PS4 very tightly, and the beauty of the tech is that it just works. The technology works so well together, and that’s how we can achieve things like 120Hz and less than 18 ms latency – we control everything. The use of Morpheus with PS4 will become much broader.

Yoshida-san also briefly talked about the biggest challenge facing Sony’s budding VR tech:

Getting people to experience VR. Unless you experience it, you don’t know what you’re missing. So that’s the challenge. Having many companies like Oculus trying it out is a great thing. We’re helping each other to get more people to experience VR, so it’s benefitting everyone.

It’ll be interesting to see how far Project Morpheus will go. Yoshida-san and his colleagues seem to be confident that it’ll go places and create a new future for games. Will Sony manage to avoid the pitfalls that turned things like 3D into an unsupported fad? We can only hope so.

The PS5 Exists.

Around the Network

it will be a good peripheral

but will fail for mass market reach

It's too early to call. Let's wait and see. Kinect sold reasonably well on the 360 and didn't even work properly, so who knows?

They need to partner with Nintendo on a shared 'third gaming pillar'... err... fourth in Nintendo's case I guess... maybe fifth depending on how the heck the NX works.

Basically Nintendo have had the time to adjust to using hardware other companies refuse to for fear of failure, add that to Sony's hype machine and Sony MAY be able to give it mass market appeal.
