Who is your favourite caracter in Metal Gear Solid (1) ? (no "solid snake", because... he is the best videogame-caracter for the people worldwide - thats not fair then ^^)

For me, it's Meryl.

She's a well-developed and layered character, rare for a video game character -- even rarer for a female video game character. She's also something of a badass, escaping detention and (twice!) getting the jump on super-soldier Solid Snake.

On the surface he just seems to be your average commanding officier but he has so much more depth then that. Despite everything we learn* about the guy and what is really going on, I got the sense that he really cares for Snake and Meryl and does his best to help you out as long as he can. I can't help but feel sorry for the guy in the end.
