I'm not joking. Are you?

It's just the way you phrased your statement. Just because something is profitable doesn't mean you wouldn't get rid of it.
Example: Thousands of products in history that have been successful and then sold to someone else for a lump sum because owner didn't value the future of the product.

I would understand that if Microsoft didn't care/have faith in the future of Xbox, but why wouldn't they? It's still profitable and still has a strong future.
Even if Xbox is still profitable and Microsoft one day randomly said they don't care about it anymore, you could say that about any company though. Sony could randomly say they don't care about Playstation and get rid of it one day as well, same with Nintendo and basically any company.

Playstation is like Sony's second best division
xbox doesn't even earn MS a tenth of what they make in a quarter, in a year.
There's a difference in scope.
It's actually really complicated. Has to do a lot with stock price and margin etc etc. I'd be writing for a page, but MS would be better off without the xbox. The brand can stay, unless someone bids excessively for it, in which case windows is always a good backup....but the box..? meh.
