Forums - Sony - So I watched my first Blu-ray movie tonight...

my sis-in-law can't tell difference between hd and sd and her eyesight is fine

my wife can tell now, after only 4 years of owning an hdtv with hd cable...

blu-ray/hd-dvd is definitely better than dvd, but

a) dvd isn't as bad as sdtv, so not as great a leap as sdtv to hdtv
b) many people (sis-in-law) can't tell the difference
c) many many others don't see enough value in the difference to pay much premium for it

dvd had features that sold it; blu-ray is only quality...the value:price ratio is just not there yet and won't be until blu-ray players are

Your tv and you cables matter.

some movies you get are just upscaled to 1080p, meaning they were filmed in standard def and turned into high def.

in order for a movie to be actual true hd it needs to be filmed in high def.

so it also depends on your movie.
