Forums - Gaming - Report predicts large lead for PlayStation 4 over Xbox One

From PolyLol, don't read too much into it, wont link.... cause you know, their articles are 7/10.

Research firm Strategy Analytics this week released a new report that seeks to predict likely sales of games consoles over the next few years.

The new Connected Home Devices Report predicted that Sony will sell more than 80 million consoles by the end of the decade. It said that Microsoft's Xbox One will sell around 57 million units.

According to Strategy Analytics, which provides statistical analysis in a number of media, content and technology sectors, PlayStation 4 "is on path to reproduce the success of the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii," according to a report in GamesIndustry. PlayStation 2 was launched in 2000 and went on to sell more than 150 million units.

In its first year on sale, PlayStation 4 has shipped 18.5 million units compared to more than 20 million PlayStation 2s and around 10 million PlayStation 3s in the corresponding launch period.

Other analysts believe that Microsoft's Xbox One, which struggled in its first year, will recover in the years ahead. The combined sales of the new consoles are significantly ahead of the last generation. according to a recent NPD report.

Around the Network

Holy shit, this is the biggest news I've heard all year!

As to be excepted. Sony does have enough of a commanding lead. In addition, historically, since Sony consoles usually sell better in year 2, that lead will grow. For Microsoft, I guess they will play their cards more close this time around in terms of price cuts. When Sony unveils its first price cut, Microsoft will follow suit. For Nintendo, lead isn't important anymore, but profitability is. That's not to say there will not be games ahead, such as Xenoblade Chronicles X or Legend of Zelda, but profiting off of it is a higher priority.

Either way, I am excited for all three this year, even if sales are included. Xenoblade Chronicles X, Disgaea 5, Qbantam Break, Ori and The Blind Forest, BloodBourne, Screamride, and many others have me enticed. It is going to be a much better year for the 8th generation than the last one. However, titles like Second Son, Dead Rising 3, and Pikmin 3 will be on my list. Whoever wins adds icing on their cake, but gamers win out in the end.

Edit: Ignore this.

I think At the same point in the 7th Gen Strategy Analytics was projecting fairly pathetic sales for PS3 over a similar time scale.

Xb one number looks on the high side of what's likely IMO. I think it is likely that the US market vs rest of world is more or less settled proportionally at 57% US. So that means over 32M Xb one's for USA. I think Kinect helped MS sell ~10 million more 360s i the USA than it otherwise would have, and with a shift back towards PS this gen (even if Xb one wins the swing has been back to PS) these factors add up to Xb one having a pretty hard time of cracking 30 million in the USA. Not impossible, but difficult. 4.3 million year 1, probably peak at 7 million at year 3. suggest LTD of 26-28M in the USA I think.

PS4 number possibly on the low side. If they are projecting 80M by 2019 when this generation will be largely over then I don't know how they can say PS4 is looking to repeat PS2 or even Wii, when 80 million is less than PS3.

Interesting the article says 18.5M shipped for PS4 when Sony explicitly said 18.5M sell through.
